this is for the vibe in my sig but I think it is the same as the Rolla's. I have had the can of marbles noise for a little bit and I plan on replacing the tensioner but first a few ?'s. I have $145K on her
1) rockauto sells a Dayco tensioner for $74+ shipping. has anyone use this before? should it be OK. They also sell just the pulley for $7+ shipping. has anyone just changed the pulley and should that be OK? or does the rubber on the tensioner wear out also
2) are the bolts holding the tensioner on regular thread? righty tighty, lefty loosey?
TIA

Id say just replace the whole tensioner unit, it will be better and you'll have less stuff to worry about then just replacing the pulley. Just my 0.02 cents
I replaced the tensioner on my 04 about three years ago with a Dayco made in Germany and the exact same as the old OEM was from auto-zone for $34 they must have gone up in price...Most people will say you have to loosen the passenger side motor mount and jack the engine up to get the bottom bolt(17mm) out but I got it out without doing that hassle, but it's a tight fit because it's real long..Good luck!
The 19mm is your permanent fixed nut and disregard the chain tensioner assy no.1, if you want the belt pattern I have a picture of that too!
alright well i have a similar situation...except i have an 05 corolla 68k on it and they replaced the tensioner a year ago...can i readjust it/ re tighten it? cuz there was way too much play on the belt and it squeals when u turn the car on
Very common issue, along with the belt. The tensioner is automatic adjusting. If there is play, replace it or see if it is still under warranty. Dayco makes a tensioner, which I put on, works well and you can add or change the oil in it.

Any pictures on how to add or change that oil in that tensioner or what type oil to use because I put the same brand in mine, I still have the instructions but it doesn't say anything about changing the oil!
I also replaced the original ticking INA tensioner for a Dayco # 89356. Instead of a rigid plastic cover on the damper, it has a nice rubber cover that can be popped up to change the oil that's in it if you like... It looked and smelled just like regular 5W-30 motor oil, so I upgraded it to Amsoil's synthetic 0W-30.

You changed from the original manufacturers oil that was it, why wasn't it working properly, had problem, old oil? Did the instructions say to do that?
It was new with new oil in. No instructions are included at all. I upgraded to Amsoil synthetic 0W-30 because I could before I installed it, and I knew it already had regular motor oil of apparent 5W-30 viscosity... It still works perfectly and quietly with about 75000 miles on Dayco tensioner.
How do you know they didn't have a correct premium grade of oil in there already, after all it was made in Germany not China! So what you're saying then is the reason being it really gives you peace of mind knowing for sure you have what you think is a better then their oil in there!
Just trying to see the logic of why some people wanting to pay $$$ for what they believe is the best (outside being a visual item) when in some cases a OEM or standard product could work just as well especially on a Corolla type vehicle it's not a BMW My tensioner is Dryco enclosed model with the same factory oil in it running 60k now with no problems but I still don't have enough to buy a cup of coffee with the .25 cents I saved
