Corolla 2005 engine noise

Hi guys,

I've recently noticed that there was a noisy grinding sound coming out of my engine. It's as if the sound was similar to the noise you get when you have a cracked or defective serpentine belt, but it's only coming on when I put the car on "D" or "R". When it's on "P" or "N", I'm not hearing anything.

I doubt the sound if from the engine belt because I changed it about 3-4 months ago (same time I got my winter tires installed).

I asked one of my friend who works as a mechanic and he told me the problem could be from something inside the tranny and that it would cost something between 250-400$ to get that fix.

I recorded a sound file of the exact sound but I have no idea on how to upload it to the forum. If any of you guys can help me on that, maybe it would help to make my explanations a little bit clearer.

Thanks !
