What's your mileage? You hear it only when driving before it's warmed up? Piston slap noise when engine is still cold is common with the 1ZZ-FE, as does mine.

Perhaps the belt tensioner.

With 98,000 on mine, it's very noticeable when the overnight temp is below 50ish.

Goes away once the car is warmed up.

Sounds like it's coming from behind the intake manifold.

if the noise is behind the intake manifold then that are your injectors clicking and that is normal.

Mine is more a heavy know sound than a tick. Tends to quiet down somewhat with new engine oil, but returns after 3-4000 miles.

At first I was terrified that I'd need a new engine (or at least a rebuild), but now I'm just making sure I change the oil a little more frequently.

No, it's actually the serpentine belt tensioner that can get noisy, especially the original INA one.

Hey, im new to Tn, but not corolla forums, I have had the same problem. I had a clinking sound during cold starts, and a knock when I put it into reverse before she warmed up. I have fixed that problem, through trial and error. I replaced the rubber exhaust gasket between the header and midpipe, and bent my heatshield a bit so it would stop knocking against my under carriage. At least thats what fixed my problem. The 1zz does idle awfully high on a cold start, it makes stuff rattle around quite a bit.

Exhaust manifold flange gasket is not mader of rubber, but Fel-Pro # 61106 is a good upgrade with its solid soft metal core where the OEM tends to burn out.
