New rims and backspacing...

I'm looking into getting some new rims for my 05 xrs so I can put winter tires on my stocks. I was looking at motegi sp10's 18x8. I was wondering, will backspacing be an issue? If my calculations are correct the new wheel will reduce backspacing by 0.8 inches. That is it will be that much closer to the center of the car. Will this cause any issues with rubbing against the wheel well or problems with springs or brakes? Thanks.

Does anyone even have 18x8 rims? That's fairly wide for a corolla. Are spacers safe if I need a few extra millimeters of backspacing?

I don't think there should be any issues. I have stretched it out to the limit with +35 offset on my Motegi SX5 wheels, which are 16 x 7 in dimension. So my rims are not as wide as your's, but my offset is more aggressive than your's.

I think you should be fine.

The lower offset is actually helping you out. I'm using this online calculator and it looks like your rims are only 0.1 inches closer to the wall where mine would be 0.8 inches closer. I will try to measure it and get back...

Ok just took those measurements. In case anyone else is interested there appears to be about 1.0+/-0.2 inches of space between the back of the wheel and the well wall on both the front and back wheels. I checked the spacing for the front wheels for both positions turned left and turned right, all the same. There is a bit more space than that between the back of the wheel and the suspension. However, there is only about 0.5 inches between the front caliper and rim. I also made an error before my wheels will be about 0.6 inches closer instead of 0.8 since I'll have lower profile tires. This means the new rims should fit. The only problem will be I am installing my H&R race springs next week and that might change the measurements. I also hope the front caliper won't be a problem.

Not sure if rolla ppl do this but us Suby guys, if we need a little extra room in the wells, roll our fenders. This allows for lower offset wheels that are also wider so we can fit beefy setups on the car.

So was this a for sure the rims fit. Cause i was actually looking at some 18x8 +40 but i would have to use some spacer to change the lug pattern. If anything im worried bout going out to far.

to the OP from the few posts I gathered that you are going to be lowered on H&R race springs which is a 2.0in drop all around. The wheels you were inquiring about are 18x8+40 ... you will be fine with this setup and you shouldn't encounter much if any rubbing unless maybe you have a full trunk and passengers because your drop isn't too aggressive.

i'm dumped on KSport coils on my '05 XRS and i'm on 18x8.5+26 with no spacers and before I went an additional inch lower all around I only experienced slight rubbing with my fenders fully rolled... i'm now tucking a good portion of my tires which are slightly stretched to help with fitment (205/40 Yoko S. Drives) and I can't have any passengers in the rear at this point or i'll be shaving my tires off.

I am considering putting a few washers behind my rear hubs and running a slight bit of camber since a few of us have been waiting for camber plates to be made because our rear camber isn't adjustable or I may go with a tire that allows for more stretch such as a Falken tire.
