Suggestions for new audio system

I am looking to replace the stock speakers in my 2005 Corolla S over the summer and I wondered if anyone had any recommended brands/equipment specs for the equipment I would be replacing. I would like it to be loud, but not to the point where it is completely deafening. The stock system was alright, but if I could make it as loud as possible (without blowing my eardrums out) I would be happy. I would like to possibly replace it all myself as a summer project, but I have never done it myself. I've heard it is difficult. I'm not sure if it would be worth doing myself or having it installed at a Best Buy location. Basically any information concerning this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just replaced the factory speakers and stereo yesterday!

I did find it a little challenging, but I'm not a really skilled person for this kind of stuff. Basically I just found tutorials and followed them to the best of my ability.

Both front and back speakers require removing interior panels which can be a little intimidating. Based on the videos I saw, it seemed like the rear 6 x 9 speakers would be the most difficult. The only problem with that was misaligned holes. The original holes did not match the new speakers and I had to drill new ones.

The front speakers required removing the entire inside door panel. Once removed, it became obvious that the 6.5 speakers I had purchased would not fit properly because the factory speakers were mounted in a custom component type thing. You have to drill through rivets to remove them and once off, I had to fabricate my own adapter/brackets out of a steel sheet. I also had to drill some new holes.

If I could go back (and like I said I'm sort of a noob at these types of things) I would have either bought component speakers or some speaker adapter/brackets to make the fitting go a little smoother.

The stereo was not that bad, but it is a little nerve racking removing the center console. You have to pull and it feels like it will not come off without breaking. I ordered this
Amazon Amazon
and it worked well.

Sorry this wasn't really a suggestion for an audio system. We went with a kenwood head unit and speakers and it was a BIG improvement over the factory system in volume and quality.

I'm sure I made the install sound more difficult than it actually was, but I'm not really a "car" guy and I don't have a big arsenal of tools. This is more of a encouraging post...If I did it, you should have no problem! haha

Thanks for the input. I'm not very savvy with this kind of stuff either. I've painted my own wheels/calipers but other than that, I usually leave things up to the professionals. haha I know that its going to cost me roughly $700-$1000 to replace everything. My biggest concern was whether its worth doing on your own, or having a store install it for you. The prices are ridiculous for labor and I wanted to avoid the cost, learn something new, and avoid having to pay to get it installed into a new car down the line. I wasn't sure if the pros outweighed the cons, but you make it sound like it should. Do you have the links to the tutorials you used? I'm really interested in this. It makes you feel good knowing that you can avoid charging stores a TON of money. haha Roughly how much did you spend? How long did it take you to install? What type of amp/subwoofer did you install?Sorry about all the questions, I try to do a lot of research before I spend a lot of money on something like this. I'm being a pain in the ass sorry. I would return the favor if I could.

This is a great video on how to remove the door panels to expose front speakers.

This is a pic tutorial on how to remove the center console/head unit

This video tutorial helped me get to the rear speakers.

I decided that an amp installation would probably be a little too difficult for me, so I will have that installed professionally when I purchase one (hopefully next week).

My audio was not extremely pricey. I didn't go all out, I just wanted something decent that sounded better than stock and allowed me to use my ipod.

Hope this helps....
