upgrades for HP/torque

I was curious who has done any upgrades on their Corollas. I have an '05 Corolla S. I wish I had the XRS since it has more HP, but I was wondering if there's any way to get the horsepower/torque up. I'm not very great with cars, so I figured someone might be able to help here. I thought about replacing the air filter with an intake, exhaust system replacements, and racing chips, but I can't spend a TON of money. I just want something to give my car an extra kick especially when I'm accelerating. Any help would be great. Any specific brands/types I should look for? I know Corollas are designed for efficiency and reliability, not speed, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks.

well intake & exhaust are good for a little more power. to get any noticeable, significant gain though, much money will have to be spent. like you said, they're designed for efficiency and reliability, not speed. the majority of the "racing chips", at least for this car, really don't do much. an E-manage Blue or AEM-FIC might help you after you add a few bolt-on parts (intake/exhaust/etc.). if you just want some easy power, maybe you should look into a 50 or 75 shot nitrous system, engine management system will be needed as well if you want this.

do you at least have a manual transmission? modifying for more power is kind of pointless if almost 30% of your engines power is being lost through an automatic transmission...

For a 1ZZ-FE Corolla, pretty much your option is to TRD supercharge the car or put a turbo on it.

1ZZ-FE does not respond to N/A mods unless they are to the extent of modifying the internals.

With just me in the car, I find that it does pretty well, power-wise, when I need to make a pass. I use another vehicle when I have a need for speed.

Power Enterprise's Camcon allows inlet cam timing and air/fuel ratio adjustments; best used with a wideband oxygen sensor monitor to determine optimal fuel corrections. It also responds very well to a cold air intake, header, JP's 2.25" downpipe with single high-flow catalytic converter+resonator(s), and 2.25 mandrel bent exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, aluminum underdrive crankshaft pulley, smooth-bored throttle body and smooth-matched intake manifold inlet+outlets, intake port inlets and exhaust port outlets...
2005+ with drive-by-wire is more sensitive intake mods, although many have managed to make it work with a short ram instead of a cold air intake.
