Corolla recall engine control module

Hi, I'm new to the Forum and just trying to navigate the site so I can get an answer to my problem.
I have a 2005 corolla ce with 14,554 miles on it. Very light local driving for 2 years. All scheduled maintenance done. Garaged since 2007 received recall notice for A0J engine control module. Battery dead so I jump started it with a cable. It started instantly and did not even crank twice as always. Brought to dealer. They replaced the battery, performed recall, changed oil and because battery was dead could not perform state inspection. I drove the car and returned for inspection but the engine light came on in the meantime. Dealer says canister replacement is needed! $532.00. Also when I left the dealer the 1st time and subsequently, the engine has to crank 3 or 4 times before it starts and very noisy. Can someone help me out with an explanation as to weather the module could be effecting performance and or if I replace the cannister will it start better and run quieter?

First check to be sure the gas cap is on tightly (turned until it clicks). Make sure the car has new gas in it. Old gas can cause certain problems. Then run the car for 100 miles or so and see if that check engine light goes out. If it does, it then may pass inspection. I don't remember if you'll have to erase the codes to have it pass in MA.

ECM replacement will cause the first few starts to run rough, until the ECM has calibrated itself during the driving. An emission test shouldn't be performed until the ECM has completed this self calibration. (it would likely take much less than 100 miles, but the longer the drive, the more likely everything will be set for optimum emission testing, including newer gas through the system)

You also might want to make sure they put the proper amount of oil in your car during the oil change. I've had dealers that leave the oil about one quart low after an oil change (on numerous occasions).

What "canister" needed to be replaced? I gotta take mine in for the recall too and sure don't need an extra bill on the way out.

Did I understand you had not started the car since 2007?
