gear box sensor

as i lookdown on the gear box i noticed a white plastic sensor sticking out the top, what is this please help daz

Manual gear box? That's your speed sensor, for your speedometer and odometer/tripmeters.

how does it work , am i right in saying that it senses motion from the lay shaft , because when your car is not in gear it still rpm s about 500/600

Speedometer sensor on top of transaxle case reads off the differential case assembly
via a driven gear sub–assembly... There's also a back up lamp switch on top of transmission case.

what is the back up lamp awitch, is that for reversing the car
