Canada Bad Gas Mileage? Help?

Hi All,

I just purchased a 2007 corolla CE with 58,000 KM on it.

It costs me about 50$ canadian at current gas prices to fill the car up.

Anyways, I've driven about 150 KM on it, and I'm already down to almost half a tank. Can someone tell me if this is normal or not? Thanks.

Also my father mentioned something about how the car seems kind of loud, perhaps an issue with the muffler so he thinks that might have something to do with it.

When I purchased the car, it came with a spoiler, so I don't know what the previous owner did to it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You don't have bad mileage, you got horrible mileage! So 36.040 miles? I look in a couple of areas. 1st, How many gallons are you putting in it? Its a 13.2 gallon tank so make sure you are being able to fill up all the way. A bad sending unit would make it look like you got half a tank when in reality it's still full. Next, look under the hood to see what the last owner did to squeeze more power out of it. Power ONLY comes from burning more gas....faster. Everything else is BS. Look for simple things, Cold Air Intake, coffee can size muffler, those will tell you if you need to go further. Was it a private sale or from a dealership? Did you get any kind of warrenty? Call and talk to the seller, ask him/her what they got or did to the car. Do some research and get back to us.

Thanks for the reply,

I got it from a Toyota Dealership from Pickering, Ontario.

I could look under the hood, but I don't really know what I am look for/at. I'm not really the best mechanic around. If you could help me get started I would really appreciate it.

I did not get a warranty on it. I just find it strange that after 200 KM its at almost half a tank already. I haven't really been speeding that much either, I only did that for pretty much the first time when commuting to work for the first time to see how it handled on the highway. By the time I got home it was almost down to half a tank when it started at the half quarter mark. I could literally observe it every few minutes going down bit by bit. Does this happen very often?

Was it certified or not by Toyota? Did they do a full inspection/tune-up recently?

It was certified by Toyota, yes. I am fairly certain they did a full inspection when the car was purchased. I'm going to monitor the car closely and see what kind of mileage i get for the next few days or so. I start work earlier than expected so I should have a good estimate by then for how much gas has been used.

Couple of days ago my '05 Corolla hit the half mark on that gauge, and I had at least 250km on it since the last fill-up (I think it was more towards 275km).

That said, based on the numbers you mentioned, you're looking at above 12L/100km, which is def high for this time of year - I've only got that high in the middle of winter. I'm hitting about 8.5L/100km, and that'll drop to an average of about 7.5L/100km by summer.

Run the car down until you have about 1/12th of a tank left, according to the gauge (this is when the fuel light will flick on, fyi), and post how many km you've put on it since the last fill-up and the type of driving you've been doing. I'll compare it with the numbers I keep track of for my 'rolla and let you know what I think, since you're not too far from me so climate effects won't play too much into it.

BlueGuy2600, is your driving mostly in the city or on the highway? When doing all city driving with lots of red lights and stop signs my Corolla gets horrible gas mileage, around 22 to 24 mpg. On the highway if I drive 55 to 65 mph mileage is generally 35 mpg or more.

Also your driving style has a huge impact on your gas mileage. Driving very fast (above the speed limits - having a lead foot), and lots of fast starts from stops will significantly impact your MPG's.

Also the blend of gasoline will impact MPG. If your gas has Ethanol your MPG will be reduced to some extent. Usually to the tune of around 10% reduction in your MPG. Try using non Ethanol gas if possible.

Interesting responses! I do speed quite a bit i must confess, I guess I should really slow it down a bit and see if there is much of a difference. But I do about half and half. city and highway. And for some reason, I've been hitting a lot of red lights lately.

I'm going to be looking at the numbers closely and ill drive the speed limits and see what sort of mileage I get. Hopefully I'll get a pretty good estimate by the end of next week.

I just wanna make sure nothing is wrong, and I'm probably being overly paranoid, but it's my first car so I can't really help it

So just to be very clear, corollas have bad fuel economy when you speed a lot, yes? If this is the case, I'll just adjust my driving habits in that case since fuel economy was one of the main reasons why I picked the corolla. My father has a 99 or 2000 corolla and says he gets good gas mileage, but he also drives the speed limit consistently. So it makes sense. Still it seemed weird that I was around 175 KM and almost hitting the half tank mark. But we'll see. I'll probably be updating this thread as time goes on. Thanks guys.

Well this is starting to make quite a bit of sense. I did the conversion and it seems I will probably get anywhere from 400-450 KM gas mileage a tank. I was hoping for 600-700. But I guess this is how things are. I wouldn't care so much about filling up so often if the damn gas prices weren't so ridiculously high right now =\

We're paying like $5.20 a gallon right now on average in Canada. (1.35+ a litre)

Actually all cars generally get worse MPG the faster they are driven, or so mechanics have told me over the years. Most cars have a MPG sweet spot for highway driving. For my 05 Corolla LE its between 55 and 65 that gives me the best MPG.

Another important factor is to try and keep your highway speed as constant as possible, aggressive driving, and speeding up and slowing down, will have a negative impact on MPG's. And hitting traffic jams will in turn negatively impact gas mileage. I think the Corolla's user manual even suggests using the cruise control when ever possible to help improve MPG's. With past cars I hardly ever used the cruise control, with the Corolla I use it all the time while driving on the highway.

Ah alright. Yeah I try to use cruise control as much as possible because I did hear it was very good for fuel economy. But it's very difficult to use in the greater Toronto area. I will be commuting at rush hour times and the highway is practically guaranteed to be jammed every day. We've been getting a lot of rain too, so that makes the traffic worse than it already is. *sigh* Anyways, going to be looking closely at this, thanks!

I have never seen my Corolla hit 600km in a single tank, save for one week with 100% highway driving up north. I generally get in the 400km range in winter, and 500km range in summer.

I fill it up with 56~57 liters (~15 US gal) , and the fuel needle goes down to the Full mark at about 250 kms (~150 miles). I get just over 800 kms (~500 miles) on a tankfull in the summer, mostly city driving.

Blue, if it helps, I just topped mine off yesterday, with about 80% Toronto driving.

Got 504.3km, put 42.07L in it, gauge was hovering at the 1/12th mark (right when the light clicked on). 8.34 L/100km, or 28mpg, which isn't spectacular but isn't something I'd sweat over, either.

Is that Kapuskasing city driving or large city driving? Cause I think there would be just a bit of a difference between northern Ontario and the GTA...

Your 8.34 L/100km = 33.9 miles per imperial gallon, or 28.2 miles per US gallon... Yeah small city driving, I average 40~42 miles per imperial gallon (34~35 miles per US gallon) in summer. I'd likely burn more gas at higher average speeds in Toronto
