Looking at buying a used 03-08 corolla or comparable year elantra. What other car would you all have bought if not for the corolla. Corollas seem expensive and am trying to stay on a budget. Are there any problems I need to watch out with them?
Amber is right. You can also check rental areas that sell cars. You can usually find a current year for a fraction of the dealer price. Yes it will be used, but you are trying to stay in budget. That is how I got mine. Good Luck! You will LOVE it!
Go private seller, I was able to get my 1 owner 90k miles 07 Toyota corolla LE for $8000. Forget elantras those car are not going to last long, very uncomfortable to drive and has the worst resale value of all cars . Take your time to buy a car don't rush, it took me almost 2 months to find my corolla, you just have to watch the car ads like an hawk. And avoid dealers if u can and do buy rentals cars because the there's a possibility that car may have been abused by the rental owners. (YouTube rental car abuse)
My 2003 Corolla has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Currently has 80,000 on it. Besides battery/tires and fluid changes, I have done nothing to repair it. I bought it new in Oct 2002. I have been looking at the all new 2011 Elantra. I haven'y driven one or sat in one but like the look of it. Not up on the older stuff. I have also been considering a New Corolla S but mine has been so good to me that for now I have no plans on replacing it. I think also good ownership has alot to do with 'proper care'. Abused cars will always require added maintenance headaches. I quit buying used stuff but a used Corolla is better the 90% of most other cars.

Well, i owned a 2001 Hyundai Elantra 5spd before I owned my 2007 corolla S...
I sadly, I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, wish I still had my Elantra.
The Elantra, stock vs stock, was more stable at highway speeds and in high winds. The Elantra was faster, it had a 140hp 2.0L vs a 1.8L 126hp engine. It had a multilink rear suspension vs a torsion bar which equated to better handling stock. It had AntiLock Brakes, which my corolla lacks. Now to the other side...
The corolla is better in some ways too... It gets better mpg, has a nicer stock radio, slightly roomier interior and trunk, and Im sure theres more, but I cant think of it right now...
Now Both of the cars were modded the same way while I had them, ie:coilovers, catback, Intake, and some flashy flash. But for some reason, mod for mod, I definitely prefer the corolla now. Perhaps it is because better quality aftermarket parts are available for it... But the Elantra did look sexy in midnight grey(purple), slammed, and rocking far too many illest/canibeat/hellaflush stickers...
Reading through your reply ... I thought you were sane until I read the above. Now you remind me of my baby sister.
lol, that was meant as a joke, Ive grown out of the "stance" phase... but I did try to give an honest and accurate argument for the hyundai.
Oh, and in my 100k with the elantra my only expenses were gas, oil, and rubber... but i do hear that over 100k they start having issues, but i got mine with 1400miles on the odo for under $10k... so Im not gonna complain.
