2006 Corolla ce upgrading to 17 inch alloy rims.

Trying to go from 15 inch steel rims. To.... 215 40?45 17.
Am I going to save over all weight? And increase performance? Or is it too big and heavy for such car?

Thank you.

I have Toyota CE and have upgraded to 17s from a Matrix XRS (215/45/17s). It's way heavier than my stock steel 15s, but it does look much better and the handling is improved thanks to more tire and stiffer sidewalls. However, acceleration is more sluggish and fuel economy has gone down so it is a trade-off and I can't help but feel that some parts (brakes, clutch, wheel bearing, suspension) is working a little harder and wearing faster as well.

Wheel weights vary. You will have to check weights and compare to your stock wheel weight. There is a very good chance that the weight will increase drastically unless you opt for the more expensive lightweight wheels.

I bought lightweight Motegi racing wheels that were about 4 lbs lighter per wheel than the stock XRS 16 inch rims.

i would have to agree that acceleration is sluggish indeed; i've got matrix trd 17s on my 03 corolla; i had 215/50 then went to 215/55 to get a smoother ride; car feels slow off the start even with intake, headers, exhaust, go figure.

I think I have 225 50 17's on my scion rims. I will have to check. My srt4 Has 225 45 17.
I have noticed a slight decrease in off the line acceleration. I have not drag raced or clutch dumped with them though.

With increased weight comes increased rotationa, mass.

Increase in rotational mass reduces response (whether off the line or rapid changes in throttle while rolling) and also increases rotational inertia. Rotational inertia means the brakes have to work harder to stop the car since when a heavier wheel is turning, it wants to keep turning and needs more force to stop due to inertia fighting in the opposite direction.

I always strongly advocate thoroughly checking the wheel and tire weight combo and also the overall diameter staying the same.
