UK Corolla T-sport from UK with Airbag and ABS lights on - HELP

Hi everyone
My name is Fernando and this is my first post at the forum, I live in Costa Rica and need serious help with my 2003 Corolla T-sport.

My Corolla was made for the UK market, it's the hatchback model with a VVTL-i 1.8 liter engine, front and rear disk brakes, traction control, ABS and frontal airbags. Some time ago my ABS and Airbag lights came on, so I took it to the local Toyota dealership, after scanning the car they told me both computers were bad, plus the clockspring under the steering wheel and some sensor on the seat belt, I was quoted a whooping $5000 for fixing it by replacing all the parts and was not given a warranty that replacing these parts will indeed fix the problems and shut the lights off...

At this point I was feeling really bad and took the car for a second opinion to a local car electronics shop, they managed to fix the ABS and told me it was some problem with the wiring, about the airbag they said they could not reflash the computer and I had to get a new one.

I am unable to find the part number I am looking for on Ebay be it USA or UK, I really do not want to pay $2500 to the local dealership for the airbag module and would like to ask if anyone knows about the interchangeability of parts between Corolla models and if i can install an airbag module from another Corolla that was sold in the States, like an XRS, same engine and trim I believe, different part number by one digit

Part number for my airbag module 89170-02160
Part number for the American version XRS 89170-02190

Anyone knows how to decode these numbers? Also if you can recommend a local parts dealer in USA I can get the parts from it would be great, I have an address in FLA so there will be no need for international shipping

Thank you all for reading such a long post, at this point I really need all the help I can get! Thanks again!

I wish I could help (being an XRS owner), but the codes are over my head.

Hopefully someone with knowledge on the parts code will chime in soon.

I dont think they are compatible. I believe that 89170‑02180 (with side airbag) is close with 89170-02160 but not the same. Were you in an accident? Did you try http://www.airbagreset.com/

The car was in a minor accident before I bought it, I was told it was just a broken headlight and bumper scratch, I had it inspected before buying it and it showed no signs of damage or big repairs, however all the lights came up recently and it looks like a Christmas tree now...

I will try airbagreset.com, thank you very much for this lead as it gave me hope, they do not list my part number but I will send them an email and find out if they can fix my computer.

This is a great community, thank you everyone for your warm welcome and willingness to help!
