Cold engine noise

I have recently purchased a 03 Corolla LE, when the engine is cold I hear a tick/knock when accelerating. This sound goes away once the engine starts to warm up. I also noticed metal fillings in my oil drain pan after an oil change. Car does not use any oil and runs good otherwise.

Piston slap noise is common and normal for the 1ZZ-FE before it's warmed up. I did adjust all my valves at 100000 miles from near maximum clearance to near minimum clearance to eliminate constant valve ticking noise at normal operating temperature... Now at 138000 miles, piston slap isn't getting noticeably worse and it only takes about 1/4 quart between 5000 mile oil changes.
You can keep your oil level at about 7/16" (10.5mm) above full line. Oil capacity was increased by 1/2 quart in 2005 by raising the marks on dipstick... Toyota recommended oil change interval was also reduced from 7500 miles to 5000 miles in 2004 for better sludge control.

TSB-0134-08 July 15, 2008
DRAIN AND REFILL WITH OIL FILTER CHANGE: The capacity has increased 0.5 liters (0.5 U.S. qts., 0.4 lmp. qts.) to 4.2 liters (4.4 U.S. qts., 3.7 Imp. qts.)
The 1ZZ-FE engine oil capacity and oil level gauge assembly (dipstick) has been updated... Previous part number: 15301-22030. Current part number: 15301-22050
