Replacing Steering fluid

Hey everyone. Took my 2006 corolla in for an oil change last week. The guy at the shop said that my power steerling fluid was really dark and needed to be replaced. Normally when he recommends work, I try to see if it is something I can do on my own first. How hard is it to change out the steering fluid, and how do you do it? I am a beginner whne it comes to working on cars, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

If that is too difficult, many multiple extractions and refills with a syringe or the like will work, but is not nearly as efficient.

I would recommend getting it swapped professionally.

fwiw........I am an ok backyarder but I had never done the power steering flush before on any car......I did it on my Vibe in about 10 minutes the other day with the help of another person occasionally starting the car and turning the wheel.....I used about 2 quarts. the stuff in there was nasty. I could not see how bad it was through the reservoir.

on my vibe i slid the reservoir out and undid the return line. I then attached a hose to the nipple on the return line and stuck the other end in a bucket.......I had the kid start the car and I filled the reservoir as the pudding pumped out. it literally took 10 minutes..............every DIYer has to start somewhere. this might not be a bad place to start........read about the procedure. get what you need organized and give it a bid.........

If you choose to disconnect the return line, I think you can still finish it yourself. When you are turning the wheels to pump out the old fluid, you may at the same time be able to see the level in the reservoir.
