80lbs is a pretty decent amount of weight. Especially if you are talking about something with the cross section of kayak (even the single occupant ones pose a huge drag load) - best to stick with a name brand rack. You will definitely get your monies work with them.
Think of it this way - how much will you pay to not have the rack drop your kayak or other gear because it slipped off the roof.
I also transport some long fishing gear (cane poles, long crappie rods, fly fishing rods, etc.) with my current rack - I put most inside a padded PVC tube (foam pipe insulation, cut to fill the inside the PVC tube) that is capped on both ends to prevent them from damage, loss, theft, etc.
