Pressure in manual tranny

My one son has a jetta that burnned up 5th gear because of low tranny gear oil, so I figure I better change out the gear oil in the 03 matrix and 06 corolla. Being worried that it may not have been filled to the correct level I opened up the fill plug the next day and as it was being take off I could hear air. I'm not sure if it was under pressure or under vacuum. Being this is the first time doing a change I wonder how normal this is...has anyone here ever encountered this before ?

Thanks

There is a breather plug valve on top to let pressure buildup escape when it warms up to operating temperature. There may be some vacuum after its cooled off, as when you checked it.
Replace manual transaxle fluid at every 40000 miles. Amsoil MTG 75W-90 GL4 is excellent for it.

Thanks Invader, I was hoping that was the case. When you get a chance please let me know where that vent is at.

Breather plug is on top of transmission case, close to the shift levers.

You can try redline MT-90 oil. I use that in my XRS. It is synthetic and also just fabulous especially when the weather is very cold.

Motul's Gear 300 75W90 GL-5 (ester based) has the highest viscosity index (222), and the lowest vicosity in colder conditions. Amsoil MTG, then Redline MT-90 are close behind... 1ZZ-FE's manual transaxle only takes 2 quarts.
