Silly question: How much oil should I have in my engine? Just did a synth oil change.

Hey TN,

I just got my 08 corolla it's first synthetic oil change. Should the oil level be all the way to at the full line on the dipstick or can it be in the middle (between the "full" and "empty" notches on the dipstick)?

Every time I've gotten a regular oil change, the dealership topped it off to the full line, so seeing my dipstick in the middle right after walking out of the dealership got me a bit confused. Part of me feels like they're trying to cut corners to save on the hell expensive synthetic oil...I'm hoping you guys can tell me if this is what is 'normal' for running a synthetic oil or if I should get some Mobil 1 and top it off myself.

Thanks,
driving90

if the level is anywhere between the full or low markings on the dipstick it's fine IMO. recomended capacity is something like 4 quarts give or take 0.2qts or something like that.

I usually have it 3/4 of the way to full.

It should definitely be refilled to the full line upon oil changes, and should ideally be maintained there too. I'd let the dealership know. They oughta top it off, as that is what you paid for.

If they only charged you for 4 qts, then you are good. Buy a qt and top it off. Now, if they charged you for more than that...then go back and raise holy heck with the crooks. While it may be OK for the car, it sure as heck isn't OK in a business to screw over their customers.

^ +1. 2/3-3/4 towards full is typically the manufacturer's recommendation for oil level.

Oil capacity is 4.2 liters (4.4 US qts). It was increased by 1/2 US quart in 2005 by raising the dipstick marks.

thanks for everyone's help. I ended up just getting a bottle of mobil 1 and topping it off myself. the dealership is a little out of the way for me, so it was easier and a better use of my time to just stop by the neighborhood walmart and grab a bottle of mobil 1 for $6.
