Check Engine Light after 60k Service

Sorry, I can't find any posts on this problem. If any one can help...please.

My daughter has a 2007 Corolla S. Just had $600 of "60k" service done at 58k miles (she's diligent about upkeep). When the car hit 60,100 miles, the check engine light came on. Service at the dealership sent her to "voice mail". Calling another dealer, the service department said it might be the gas cap. She has smelled no gas and check the cap for normal operation (obviously no pressure test or "sniffer"). My guess is that the service tech forgot to reset a mileage sensor, causing the check engine light to come on between 60k and 60.1k. Just a guess. Any experience with this, or any thoughts would be appreciated. Returning to the servicing dealership is a 100 mi. round trip for her. Thanks.

You should not get a check engine light because of mileage. It sounds like something else is the issue. Gas caps do fail occasionally and it is unlikely that you would smell any gas. If it is not sealing properly it can trip the CEL. After 2000 miles, it may well be something other than the dealers problem.

Zembonez, Thanks for the response. I'll have her have the gas cap checked and go from there. As for the check engine light not coming on due to mileage, I may be wrong but after three Corollas and now a Tacoma, I'm pretty sure that if I have not reset my oil change mileage, the check engine light starts coming on briefly before 5k and then stays on after 5k. However, I may miss-remember this.

Oops, wrong indicator lamp

Now I'm done today's chores, I checked the manual on the Tacoma. If the Corollas are the same (I think) there is a difference between the "Maintenance Required" indicator (reset after oil changes, etc.) and the "Service Engine" indicator. So, I guess my daughter will have to have the codes checked to see why the "Service Engine" (i.e. call your Toyota Dealer) light is on.
