USA Undercarriage Rust

Hi, dealership tech showed Me my 9yo. Corolla LE undercarriage (when on lift) and I was amazed at how much Rust was evident. Even when I kneel down and look inside, above the tire, I see all rusted parts. The body of car is clean - is this typical? BTW- car has 40,000 plus a few hundred miles. Would like to hear from others who don't garage their car.

Somewhat normal for a 9 year old car driven in your winter conditions. Anything bare metal is going to be solidly rust covered. Is the structure of the car rusty?

I've seen 5/6 year old trucks in Michigan with rust on them. Really disgusting because it's probably the greatest fear for car owners. I have a 94 camaro z28 with 77,000 miles on it and there is also underbody rust (exterior/interior are immaculent). Apparently it's a difficult process for the DIY type people out there without having the right tools, materials, and space. I'd still be interested in some good tech articles if anyone has any tips? I hear wonderful things about POR-15 ($$$ but good) being used to paint underbodies after they have been cleaned of rusted areas.

No, Moderator. No mention was made to rustproof.

"Anything bare metal is going to be solidly rust covered..."

Thanks for that answer as it reminds Me of My Dad's old wheelbarrow which he had for decades which was all metal - and as long as I can remember was always completely rusted and he hauled very heavy bricks, etc. besides dirt; and it never fell apart; so, I do feel better now. Thank You again, for that knowledgeable answer!

BTW- Exterior of vehicle is completly clean as it's hand polished every year. It's a 2003 Model which was purchased in June of '02.
