I've noticed some threads on here with people claiming 500 miles to a tank of gas?!?! Honestly, if I get over 325 miles to a tank of gas that's pretty good. Granted I live in Florida where it's 95+ everyday outside and the AC is constantly on, I also have 17" Scion TC wheels. Should I be alarmed? Post up your miles per tank so I can get a rough idea about an average number versus the, "elite" numbers that probably don't use AC, drive 55mph with cruise for the 500 miles, windows up, going down hill.
Normally the biggest factors that affect MPG's is driving style (lead foot, lots of fast starts and stops) and the type of driving you do (in city driving with lots of traffic lights/stop signs, all highway driving, or a mix of both) on a daily bases. Also ensure your engine's air filter is clean and not clogged with leaves, dust or other materials. And try to empty as much unneeded items from the car/trunk. People routinely fill up their car and trunk with stuff. That added weight negatively impacts the car's MPG. Lastly the gasoline can impact MPG's. Gas with ethanol (my area uses 10% ethanol in the gas) will rob your car of MPG's. Usually to the tune of around 10% less MPG with ethanol gas than with gas without ethanol.
That said. My 2005 Corolla LE automatic gets horrible MPG in city driving due to the many stop lights and stop signs in my area. I generally get around 22 to 24 MPG in city driving. However on the highway with the cruise control set at 65 I generally get 34 to 36 MPG. For pure highway driving I generally get just over 400 miles out of a tank of gas. Once, using a tank of non ethanol gas I got 40 MPG while driving on the highway. That was a plesant surprise.
Sold my 03 Solara V6 (20 MPG city) recently and now own a 2006 Corolla S. When I filled up today it was at 326 miles with about 1/8 tank left. After doing the math, I am getting 30 MPG all city driving, and A/C on about 75% of the time (if its cool enough at night I'll open the windows). I dont drive hard.

Yea, that sounds pretty close to what I"m getting, a little better actually. Last time I ran the trip it was around 28.5mpg mixed. I generally don't ever go above 3k rpms when accelerating but usually cruise at 70mph on the freeway. I get about 10 gallons of fuel into the car from the 1/8 tank mark. The 17" wheels that are on there don't help but she looks nice .
427 miles on my last tank full... 11.9 gal. 75% highway 60 - 75 mph. '06 Corolla S w/ Auto

I get 39-40 mpg with my 2005 LE.
In my opinion saying you get so many miles per tank is useless information.
What do people do, run the tank dry, kick the tank to hear a hollow sound to make sure it's bone dry????

Yea, you're right it is hard to get a accurate number from people because the amount at which they refill may be slightly different. However, it's safe to say that refilling at the 1/8 tank mark would have no ill effects on the fuel pump versus trying to get every last mile out of the tank...lol. So I guess that's where I'll set the standard (1/8 tank).

Since the gas tank of my 05 Corolla holds 13.2 gallons, It's simple to estimate how far I could go on a full tank of gas. The last couple of pure highway driving trips I was averaging around 34 miles per gallon, which means on a full tank I could conceivably drive approximately 448.8 miles before running out of gas.
Knowing approximately how far you can drive on a full tank is actually quite useful if one is planning a long distance trip. It can help you estimate how many stops you may need to make for fuel on the trip.

What size (width and aspect ratio) tires are on your 17" wheels? If tires are more than 25"outer diameter, you're logging more miles than indicated... It also depends how much is a tank for you. Some run to a gas station when the low fuel light comes on, and may also stop filling when the gasoline dispenser clicks off at high pumping speed.
I do get better fuel mileage on 91 pump octane (95 RON) compared to 87 (91 RON) which contains up to 10% ethanol. I average about 500 miles on 15 US gallons (12.5 imperial gal) in 3/4 city driving.
You will get less with an automatic and with the A/C on.

The scion tc wheels are the exact same diameter as the stock wheels. I've confirmed this as well via gps and the speedometer(both were within .5mph of eachother). However, the scion tc wheels with low profile tires seem to way more than the stock wheels. My last fill up was 10 US gallons and I achieved 270 miles (27mpg). This was with about 60-70%highway driving, ac was only used under extreme conditions but turned off on 1st/2nd gear acceleration. I don't feel my mileage is on par with everyone elses. The car is a 2003 Toyota Corrola S & has 110k miles. Has anyone replaced 02 sensors after the 100k mile mark?
On a trip from Savannah GA to Augusta GA and back I managed 442 miles on a tank. Filled past the pressure switch just before I left town. I was just under E when I got back in town to the first station and put $10 in.
