Shift lights won't turn on

Hey guys, first time posting on these forums. Anyways, I own a 2003 Toyota Corolla and just recently my dashboard lights would not turn on at all for one night but they have now come back on and work perfectly but my shift lights won't turn on at all. How do I go about fixing this? And would it be easier/more cost effective to just bring it in to a mechanic to fix this?
