Hello dear forum members,
I have a quick question about all of you driving the 9th gen with a 5 speed manual transmission. Just over the weekend I found a clean 04 Corolla S for sale on the local CL. The car has 139,XXX miles, its clean, inside and out, very well maintain i should say, but here comes the bad part... they were asking only $3500 OBO, after I called the seller he explained to me that the transmission is broke and will need to be replaced, he also told me that the clutch was replaced about 1,000 miles. His explanation was that the car will not stay in gear and there is a horrible noise when driving it... So I called him and I jumped in my 96 corolla to go and check out the car... Like I said the car is clean, checked all the fluids, brakes, suspension everything checked OK, but then I "tried" to drive it... Every time I will put the car in gear it will literally jump of it within seconds. The noise coming form the gear box was horrible, it sounded that every single gear was shot, every single sinchro was gone... I mean I couldn't even drive it to the end of his street, even if I were to hold the gear shifter in gear, after about 2 sec it will snap out of my hand.....
Are those gear boxes known to have problems?
I have heard that many Matrix owner have had problems with manual transmissions just dying for no reason?
The seller also told me that he already priced a used 5 speed for about $1300... that seems a little high for me ...
Not sure. I think a lot depends on how the car was driven and how well it was taken care of. People jamming the gear and popping the clutch while downshifting without proper rev-matching also puts too much stress on the synchros.
For instance, I have 110,000 KM on my 6 speed manual 2ZZ-GE box and it is still flawless even though I rev it up to 8400 rpm all the time. Despite the stress of those extremely high revs, I am happy with how well it works.
My secret is proper care such as synthetic GL4 MT-90 redline gear oil and I am an expert at rev-matching and heel-toe downshifts so the synchros in my car have to do the least amount of work to match the speed of the engine to the speed of the transmission.
I would say, find another clean 5 speed manual and take good care of it and it should be fine.

I have seen quite a few posts here about Corolla (& Matrix) manual transmissions failing due to a weak bearing design. Not sure if this is the same problem, but it sounds like a transmission is needed - regardless of the cause.
yea I am sure that the transmission is gone, as far the 6 speed manual, I believe those are build may be a little different b/c of the engine power....

Trust me, although you are right the C60 transmission has been built differently due to the very high-revs, but I have seen many broken C60 transmissions and synchro issues in them as well.
All I know, I have taken very good care of the transmission and proper synthetic oil alongwith rev-matches and heel toes to ease the load on the synchros as much as I can and so far everything works perfectly (knock on wood!).

Well to be honest, I had my eyes on the new celica (2000-2005??) gen, but from the 15 cars I found in my area, 2 had a blown engine, 4 had a rebuild/junkyard engines in them. After doing some research seems like those just don't last??? then I jumped on the XRS Corolla but finding one in a good condition/low miles is close to impossible... plus they still hold up the value pretty high, after all from what i have found its basically a 4 door Lotus
That transmission is crap. Just got mine back 1 week ago from being rebuilt with 151k miles. Mine was in good shape otherwise, replaced bearings and clutch.
Sounds like your's will have to have a used trans (1200-1700) around here.
Honestly, I wouldn't pay more than $2500 since you'd have to put $1-2k in it.
Yeah, a couple of people over the years had offered me a decent chunk of money for my "low mileage" (only 115,000 KM after 7 years), but I passed. I will keep this car till it dies and buy something new in a couple of years.

wow thats crazy low miles, considering its a Toyota you light have to wait more than a couple of years, I mean both of mine 7th and 8th gen corollas have over 200,000Miles and still run like a champ
I have an 06 I bought new with a 5 speed, I'm on my fourth tranny with 671,000 kms on the odo (it's really my third ODO showing 60,000 k's) and it's all highway from Kamloops BC to Prince George BC and I have changed the fluid every 40,000 on the first one, the second I never changed it and the third was a rebuild and it got the 40k oil change done when needed and it lasted the shortest amount of time. These 5 speeds are junk with big time bearing wear problems. I think Toyota needs to do something because this might just be my last one.
