What could be wrong?

I took my 2008 Corolla in to the dealer for a PA state inspection today. I passed, but was told that my serpentine belt needed to be replaced VERY soon. Upon leaving the dealership, I noticed that whenever I accelerated a growling turbocharged type sound was coming from somewhere within the front engine area. This was the first time I heard such sounds coming from the car.

Does this sounds like a problem coming from the serpentine belt, or something else?

Thank you.

Pretty hard to tell from here, but if the belt needs replacing, I'd get it replaced soon. Broken serpentine belt means stranded on the side of the road.

A 3 year old belt needing replacement? How many miles on it? I am guessing your sound is transmission whine, but that is just a guess.

About 36k. I was also told I needed a new belt at another dealership when I got my oil change 1 month ago, so I doubt they are trying to "pull one" on me!

What does strike me odd is the roaring/growling sound coming from the engine started right after I left the dealership today....and I have never had this problem before. They even didn't charge me for the state inspection/emissions test, saying they had made me wait too long (about 3 hours total). Perhaps I am being paranoid...

Is the growling sound relative to engine rpm or vehicle speed? You need to isolate its source, somehow... Can you get a sound clip of it?

Change your belt, if it still makes noise it's your tensioner, also a reason why your belt probably wore out early, either way change your belt, check the tensioner while your in there
