corolla engine noise after flood

Hello everybody! I got a situation. I got a corolla 2005 CE automatic engine 1ZZ-FE.

there was a flood and I though I could have make it but suddenly the car stop and wouldn't turn on. Had to pay for a truck to take it to my house.

To my surprise the engine sucked water tru the intake since the filtet was wet. I dry the filder and try to start the car but no luck. after starting for bout a hour. the car turn on then off, after a while it turn on but with that weird tickling noise. the more I accelerate the louder it is.

Things I did:

1.Remove the searpent belt and still with the noise. by doing this I confirm is not the pulley, compresor, water pump, etc..

2. Open the top cover and bottom engine cover and removed all gunk in there. change oil with 10-30 castrol and a motor treatment for the lifters. stilll no luck

the only thing I havent check is the timing chain tensioner but I heard is very uncommon to be bad, specially on a car of 2005.

Some people fix the problem by replacing the pulley and others by changing their manifold.

WHat in the manifold that could maybe make it rattle?? I heard this from a guy from youtube so I dont know if its true.

The noise is very similar to this one from the video of someone having the same problem.

You probably have bent rod if you sucked in water.

You're probably going to need engine work or a new engine, especially if the water was sucked into the engine.

Would have to agree with mikered30 on that one. Engines cannot compress liquid. Should have taken out the spark plugs before cranking it over. Water would have come out the spark plug holes just like a water fountain. Best of luck....

How wet was the air filter? Was the water up to above the bumper, and did the airbox fill up with water before draining at the bottom of it? After it stalled, the starter worked but the engine didn't start right away? It could be just your IAT/MAF sensor on the intake that got wet and dirty, causing it to run lean and rough.

yes the bumper was almost above my front bumper. the airbox was humid but didnt had to drain it cause it was only a little bit of water.

It sounded like it was a starter problem, doin the "click click" thing then it started to move but the engine was like hard to spin, after a long time of starting the car the engine got smooth and was able to start it.

Im very convinced it was a hydrolock on the engine. But the engine runs fine and it hasn't lost any power or rough start, just the clack, clack from the head, sound lie from piston number one.

"...when I try to start it there is no compresion, and the engine sound like slow" ??

No compression at all, but it's hard to crank it with starter? Cam timing is good? Was the head checked for cracks? Were any connecting rods bent?

Thank to everybody advice. I replace the piston with new NPR rings and engine is in peak condition. Here is a zip pic by pic by some guy who did a timing chain replacement. http://www.therussian.net/random_crap/TimingChain.zip

My thanx also goes to 1st Gear which is a member of corolland dotcom
