Engine noise on highway

I have a 2003 Corolla LE automatic with 74K miles. Recently it started to have some engine noise problem. When I drive on highway for about ten minutes, the engine starts to generate roaring noise, and sometimes I could feel some vibrations. After I reduce the speed below 45 mph, the noise would usually be gone. Also the engine seems to consume some oil (about 1/2-1 qt. per 5K miles). What could be the cause of the problem?

The Check Engine Light is never on, but would a OBD-II scan tool be able to help provide a code in diagnosing the problem? Thanks!

Can you describe the noise a bit more?? Whistling, gears meshing, clanking??? etc.

Thanks! The noise is not in high pitch as whistling, but more like loud clanking. And the RPM does not go up during that period of time. It only happens after I drive it on highway for a few miles.

I have an 05 S model with 78K. On a windy day I get the whistling noise and the clunking noise. I think it might have something to do with the bodywork on the S model. My oil consumption is a half quart at 5K miles so I think your in the ball park.
