What was the code? There are 2 O2 sensors. You should get the ECU replaced. The 06s have a high ECU failure rate.

That sensor is located under the car in the exhust pipe. It is not the sensor you see when you open the hood. Replace it with a NGK or denso direct fit sensor. You will have to pull back the carpet on the left side of the passengers side floor r to reach the connector. Then get the ECU replaced.

It is not the one you see when you open the hood. You have to get on the ground to see it. You will need an O2 wrench and some pb blaster to remove it. The Haynes book you have shows the location and the DIY on the removal of the down stream sensor.

http://matrixowners.com/index.php/to...r-in-a-matrix/

You can use a regular wrench.

No problem. Make sure you get ngk (ntk) or denso direct fit and you should be ok. Stealer will have it, Oem should be denso, but the markup is huge.

Amazon has a denso for $50

BTW you should find a cheaper mechanic.
