07 Corolla Engine troubles

My father in law has a 07 Corolla. He was passing a vehicle and heard a bunch of rattling coming from the engine and it went dead. He got it towed to my house and now it will not start. The starter clicks like the engine is locked up.
We checked all the fluids, they look fine. We booted the battery to make sure it had power. We also took a wrench and spun the accessory belt to make sure that none of those components were causing a bind.
Any suggestions?

Is the engine locked up? Can you turn the crank?

When you try to start it, it just clicks. And the lights go dim.

I don't think so.would that have anything to do with it? Seems more mechanical than that.

I agree with Mike... If your battery's good, it's likely the original ECU that is failing.

Are you able to crank the engine over at all with the starter and with booster cables, or by turning the crankshaft pulley bolt?

If it's manual, can you move the car and turn engine over a bit with it in 5th gear? Was it possibly downshifted in 2nd instead of 4th at highway speeds? A catastrophic engine failure is not impossible.

We called the dealership and they told him the battery was most likely dead. We put a new battery in, and of course it's the same thing. It's as if the starter is trying to turn, but it can't.
It's an automatic, so we can't try to push start it.

Your next step would be to find someone that can borrow you one, hopefully with the new battery the code is still stored, if there are any. How many miles on it?
