I have a newly purchased 2008 Corolla LE automatic 20,000 miles. Toyota certified used car

At 55 to 60 MPH on the highway I hear a musical whine that changes with throttle. In my experience this is pinion noise.

Is this common, a sign of trouble to come ?

Any information will be appreciated.

Tire noise can sound exactly like differential whine at speed. Might be worth a shot to rotate the tires around, see if the noise follows the tire(s) or stays the same.

Could also be noise from the electrical systems - changes with RPMs as well. Both my 2002 Corolla and 2003 Matrix did it at highway speeds, where it is easier to notice the sound. Double check chassis grounds, make sure the battery is up to snuff. Both of my cars, the OEM battery just flat out died on me, before I expected them to.

Is it still under warranty?
Have the dealer look at if you just purchased it recently.
