doors lock unexpectedly

I have a 2004 Corolla S with power locks and a keyless remote. Every once in a while the doors will all lock at once, seemingly at random. Like I'll be in the garage and will open the car door for some reason and then shut the door, the doors are unlocked at this point, and then a minute or two later all the doors will lock. Has this happened to anyone else?

If you have the key fob in your pocket is there any possibility that you might put some pressure on it as you move? The "lock" button on mine has a little raised nubbin so that would be my guess.

That's normal. If you unlock it with your remote, but don't get in and insert key in ignition, it locks up automatically in case you'd unlock it for any reason then walk away, leaving your beloved Corolla in a vulnerable state.

Is it possible to disable this feature? This feature has resulted in me locking my keys in the car twice now, and I want to disable it if at all possible.

To disable auto door lock: Key in ignition, turn to on position. Open driver's door and remove key (keep door open). Put key in and out 4 times (in/out only without turning key) finishing with key removed. Hit drivers side unlock switch 5 times. Wait at least ten seconds and shut the driver's door.

here is what I am doing:

Key in ignition, turned to on position. Door closed and unlocked.

open driver's door

turn key to off position, and remove it

re-insert key without turning it, then remove it, repeat 4 times

at this point the key is out and door is still open

hit driver's unlock (the rear side of the lock/unlock switch in the armrest) 5 times

wait ten seconds, shut driver's door
-------------------------------------------------

the above is not working. After I do this, the car is not acting any differently. I am also not getting the confirmation at the end of the process, such as the dome light flashing or the locks locking and unlocking once, like you get when you successfully program your remote. Any suggestions?

Wow! That is quite the "cheat code".

Since the steps above are not working, I'm wondering if the theft deterrent system is the problem. I have the original remote but am not the original owner. The LED panel on the dash is just a plastic blank. When I hit the unlock button on the remote the hazard lights flash twice. But then the doors lock automatically again after 30 seconds.

The below document says that hitting the remote puts the car in the "alarmed" state, but does not say how to avoid this altogether. When I follow the steps on page 73-21 I cannot get the system respond, so maybe these instructions do not apply to me either. Sort of stumped right now.
