Catalytic Converter

Hellos, i need a catalytic converter for my car and the place i took it to to get checked was going to charge me almost 1k to get it fixed - im pretty sure it doesnt cost that much and its the only part they were going to get. So i was wanting to buy one online instead and try to save some money. But i have no idea what to look for? Can anyone give me a specific part to look for? Whenever i look i get about 15 different results and im not sure which one i need. I have a 2003 Corolla S. Any help is much appreciated <3

Where are you going... the dealership?? I would just find a local reputable exhaust shop if I were you.

I'm showing the OE part numbers as 17460-0D070 and a dealer list price of $1447.75 for the part.

However there is a TSB posted for a redesigned converter/front pipe assembly that is available to correct a sulfur smell and a P0420. Its part number is 17410-0D360. A computer programming update is also supposed to be done when this converter is installed. I don't have dealer list price available for this with my info but I did find one for sale online for about $800 (plus shipping).

I also found some aftermarket options available for about $300-350 (plus shipping). Some are the complete front pipe assembly with "universal" style converters already welded on. Others are the converters only and will need to be welded on to what's left of the front pipe after cutting them off. Regardless "universal" converters generally aren't a very good idea. Since they are not specifically built to your cars specs they may not work well enough or last long enough to last nearly as long as the factory converters. It's also illegal to use Universal Converters in some "green" states - especially California.

As for the Oxygen Sensors... they probably aren't necessary but if you have over 100,000 miles on the cars might be worth it for maintenance purposes. Since they have to be removed anyway to do the computer there should be no extra labor for replacing them.
