hey, just moved to toronto from ireland
had a rolla for over 4 years back home but had to leave her behind, didnt sell though, its my pride and joy....
anyway on the lookout for a rolla over this side of the water, any advise?
since you posted in the 9thgen section of the corolla I would say if you can drive stick I say look at the 2005-2006 corolla XRS. More power than standard CE/S/LE. If no go for the S since it has more stuff
cheers for that, well i suppose i posted in here as thats what i have back home.
dont think the budget will stretch that far here.
iam finding the price of cars in the 2nd hand market very dear.
might end up getting a 96 1.6 rolla even, just need wheels as i hate walking or relaying on lifts
at home if a car is 1000euro, you hand over the 1000euro, sign the log book, send it off to be put in your name and about a week later it arrives back in your name, job done.
you pay 1000euro for the car total, end of.
i know theres going to be tax this and tax that here isnt there ???

Depends on if you are buying from a dealership (certified used one etc.), they would do most of the stuff themselves. They tell you the out the door price and you just pay that. It includes the sales tax in it.
Then, obviously you need the license plate and get the car registered. For that you have to get it from a registry office so you should look for the closest registry office to you.
Now, if you buy it privately from a seller, he/she should have the paperwork ready and usually the sales tax varies depending on which province it is.
For instance, in Alberta the sales tax is only 5% (GST) while it is around 12% in Ontario (HST). Still, all of the calculations should be done by the seller. You go and pay the amount and get the receipt back with all the details of the payment on it.

Since you looking for something private, ask for the UVIP [Used Vehicle Information Package] ... it tells you everything of the car, like history, actual mileage, etc. and also there is a selling agreement in there that both party sign.
For around $4,000, you can get a decent 1999 - 2000 or 2001 Corolla
thanks for that
yeah i cant believe how dear cars are here.
back home you would get a very clean 2000 rolla for 1500euro, so $2000
but the car market bottomed out when the recession really hit ireland

Correct. Seems like the demand for used car market lately has been heating up driving the prices of used cars up.
On a side, conversion from currency to another currency is not the best way to deduce things since things have to be looked at in the entire context of the economy. Which is why the concept of per capita was introduced.
Since I myself came alone from another country at a very young age, I understood this idea early on that the price of things are always relative to the earning power in that particular economy.
For example, over here making nearly 6 figure salary is fairly typical after a few years (I should know ) as a professional (Engineering, finance, commerce etc.) in the major provinces in Canada, which is quite the contrary to making 6 figure in European countries.

i understand what your saying but i have been watching the car market over her and america for a few years and new cars are cheaper as a whole in comparison to ireland.
i never had an interest in the 2nd hand market untill now, hehe
also and again this is a straight convert, $100,000 is about 75,000euro and 80% of professionals in the fields you mentioned were on this sort of money in Ireland over the last number of years.
i know this as iam trying to get into one of them fields, with no joy thus far
