You mean you replaced the belt 20k miles ago, and now you replaced the belt tensioner? What brand of belt is it?

Can you tell if it is the belt when listening to it with your head under the hood?

The Dayco tensioner like I've had for a good while is fine... It's hard for me to tell what you're hearing, and only when idling at 1000 rpm. Can you get a sound clip of it from different spots around the engine?

All stock intake? What year is that? It's an automatic? How's your transmission's fluid level, and was the fluid ever replaced? What mileage are you at?

There is a tsb for transition cooling lines that rub on the transition making a hoot noise tsb #01205.

For my corolla it was the donut at the exhaust manifold you can easily go on the ground near driver door while noise is happening and touch the exhaust with your shoe. if it stops the sqeel/chirp noise get a new donut or possibly just change exhaust support straps. They changed three belts before they found it. Sounds exactly the same as a bad belt even when looking right at the belt.

Let me know if this is your problem too.

GO to a gator back belt from good year. Do a search on gator back belts in this forum and you will see a plethora of others with like issues.

I own a 9th Gen and there are 3 Total in my family. I also worked for 3 years as a tech at Toyota. I have found there is no fix for the belt squeal on the Corolla. No matter which belt you use they squeal lightly on start up after about 10000 miles on a new belt and after 20000 miles the start up squeal gets louder. Mine squeals every morning. It can only be heard when outside the car. The belt tensioner is the updated kind I installed myself. The belt is almost new. I think the squealing comes when the felt that covers the rubber on the new belt wears off. The felt is softer and doesnt allow minor slips on the smooth pulleys. When the felt wears off the rubber slips ever so slightly on the smooth tensioner or water pump pulley when there is moisture or its cold. I consider it perfectly normal. If another manufacturer belt works better (I have seen plenty of different types squeal) then just use that one.

But...

I say get ready to deal with it. Just one of the few minor issues this car has (if you really consider it an issue).

On a good note I have never seen a 9th gen lose a belt. So the squealing isnt dangerous.

My GoodYear Gatorback serpentine belt is still always perfectly quiet with about 110,000 miles on it and Dayco tensioner, and it still looks great.

My 2003 has had a new tensioner and a "Continental" brand belt on for over 18 months (and 22,000 miles) and it's still completely quiet.

I love these belts.. they feel more solid and heavier than Gates/Dayco and have a textured "smooth" side which really help with noise issues. Their only drawback is they can be a little bit harder to install because of that but a little bit of water works as a lubricant to help it on.

I never was a big fan of the "gatorback" belts. All the ones I've seen with any kind of miles tend to stretch out much faster than others. Maybe not much of an issue if your tensioner has plenty of travel (like on these Corollas) but for cars with manually adjusted belts they can be problematic.

Yup. Like I said working at a Dealership regardless of what belt somebody had on their Corolla if the car was ever left over night it would squeal on cold startup or during humid nights. Mind does this everyday with only like 15K on the new belt. So does my brother in laws 03 with updated tensioner and my father in laws 07 with updated tensioner.

If another belt works then go for it. If your belt has no cracks and the noise isn't a rattling or grinding and you can't hear it from the inside just I wouldn't worry about it.

Unless the noise is driving you absolutely bonkers! HA! The old belt was original and had no cracks but squealed its rear end off when cold or humid. I was well aware of the bulletin on the tensioner but I went ahead and replaced the tensioner and the belt together.

Never had any noise since - even on cold or humid mornings.
