SRS Light Is On

Hi Guys,

My first post here. Today my SRS(airbag light) light went on my 2005 Corolla.
I called my service center up(dealership) and they said that I need to bring my car in so they can run some diagnostics. They said I'm still under my extended warranty, but he never gave me a clear answer when I asked him If I would be charged for the diagnostic test.

All he said was that once he finds out what the problem is than he can tell me how it will be covered by my warranty. I kept asking him if I would be charged for the diagnostic test itself under my extended warranty, but never gave me a clear answer.

So I'm asking you guys...Will I be charged for the diagnostic for my SRS light considering im still under my extended warrany?

I plan on calling again and talking to someone else, but before I do, I want to be a little prepared.

Hope you guys can help me out...

Thanks!

Mine came on a couple times, but it stopped after jiggling the plug-ins on passenger airbag above glove compartment opening... It should be warranty covered for 5 years/60 K miles.

It depends on the terms of your extended warranty. Some plans cover diagnostic charges and some do not.

The service adviser does not know if yours covers this or not and to be honest he probably doesn't want to spend half an hour on hold on the phone to find out until he's got your car (and your business) at his disposal. I can't really blame him.

The way it works is the service adviser has to call the warranty people to get authorization on the repairs. It is at that time they tell him/her what is covered and how much they'll pay. He can't call and get authorization to find this out until he knows what's wrong with it.

I've been in his shoes and it's a huge PITA but that's how it works. I've had some authorize the diagnostic charge (even if they weren't supposed to) and I've had others reject it even though it was listed as being covered. It's usually easiest just to take what they give than to fight it and spend hours on the phone making no progress only to have every claim I file after that get put on hold and scrutinized!

I've even had some warranty plans that covered the repairs but not the fluids so there were times when I had to charge my customers for a couple gallons of antifreeze even though their water pump job was covered! Crazy stuff I tell you!

The people who approve these repairs actually get bonuses based on what they catch that isn't covered. In other words the guy who didn't approve the antifreeze for the water pump job probably got a percentage of that $30 they saved by making the customer pay for it. I've literally made a phone call and got a repair denied but then immediately called right back and got another person who was having a better day who approved the coverage!

If you really need to know then you need to find your warranty paperwork and call them yourself to find out.
