So I've had my Toyota Corolla LE 2005 for a few months now, and the car handles well. But since I'm still young I haven't outgrown my need for speed. I stay on the speed limit, I'm not crazy or anything but I love the acceleration of a car. But with this Toyota I felt as though it couldn't give me that. So I was looking through the manual one day and I read about Gear 2. It stay on the lower gears meaning it gives me more acceleration. So my question is are there any ill effects of using Gear 2, and is there anything I can do to kick out more speed on this thing?
Probably not going to hurt anything but you'll have added wear to the engine and poor fuel economy. By using that shifter position all you're doing is preventing it from shifting into 3rd and overdrive.
Speed costs money and you invested in the wrong product for speed. The Corolla is about function and reliability. If you need something a lot faster. Sell it and use the money as a down payment to buy a used (2007-2008) V6 Camry. That thing will make your head spin.
This is my first corolla. This car is a 2005 LE, bone stock with over 100,000 miles. When I test drove the car, I stomped it and the acceleration was such that I almost landed in my trunk.
If your corolla doesn't accelerate fast enough, then there might be something wrong with your car or you...
You can shop in the TRD products catalog but be warned...it's gonna cost. You can add a cold-air intake and a less restrictive exhaust to start at the cheapest way for a few more ponies, then go all the way up to a turbo and an engine rebuild using different cams. But thats where serious money comes in. Too much more power and you gotta consider the tranny, axles, brakes and the like. Keeping your tranny in L2 is gonna do nothing but force it not to upshift and put unneeded wear on it. Be happy for what it is...not for what it isn't.
My 06 with a 5sp manual is surprisingly quick. I assume that you have the 4sp automatic. I haven't driven an auto corolla but I've read that the stick is rated for about 0.2s faster 0-60. If you think your rolla is slow, come take my camry for a spin. B)
I love toyota 4cyls. I love the way they coil up through the midrange (2500-4500 or so). My camry runs out of breath in the peak rpm range (5000+) but the corolla pulls 'til redline.
and ++ to all of the above posters. You can make a corolla fast but it'll cost ya. I would look into suspension and wheel upgrades before trying to make more power.
BTW, since you probably have a 1ZZ-FE engine, if you don't already, try using higher grade (89/91+) fuel instead of regular unleaded. The 1ZZ has a relatively high 10.5:1 compression and makes some modest power gains (say~1-3HP) with better fuel efficiency. I gained 2MPG with just midgrade(89) for example.
I'm currently testing 93+ and about 2/3rds of the way through this tank. she is a lot harder to stall out now and I can cruise in 5th as low as 38MPH. Next up is 93+E0 marine fuel. Since I live on the coast that stuff is easy to get. Don't let the name Marine Fuel scare you. I asked the shop owner. It's just gasoline without the extra detergents or ethanol.

Invest into an xrs. Not sure fooling with a turbo kit at this point is such a great idea.
Exactly. A naturally aspirated engine that's designed for performance from the factory will always be more reliable than an engine that was designed for economy and not meant to be turbocharged from the start.

Eventually grenading the gearbox...
In my opinion cornering is more fun than flat out speed as it requires actual skill and can be had for little money. You can have as much fun at 25mph as at 90 without attracting cops especially with a light car like the corolla. corollas aren't set up for proper handling from the factory but a sway bar and some better tires will fix this. There's nothing like watching your passengers get thrown about when you're driving slowly.

Smooth driving is comfortable and easy. It is also FAST(though not comfortable at speed). I don't care if you apex corners(everyone does) on a public road unless you suck at it(everyone). Hold a proper line or get out of my way.
