I was told by a Toyota parts manager to clean tranny filter in brake fluid instead of buying a new filter. This was on a 1989 Land Cruiser. not sure about your vehicle.

It's just a screen so cleaning it with a solvent is just as good as replacing it.

To be perfectly honest these days there's almost no reason to drop the pan in the first place. Just do a tranny drain and fill with each of your next three oil changes and you should be good - or you can flush the fluid using the cooler hoses.

The valve body oil strainer assembly (not a filter) doesn't need to be replaced, but just rinsed out, although there is a gasket bonded to the oil strainer body. You could get a 'filter and gasket set', as you should replace the transmission oil pan gasket if you remove the pan to clean it and the magnets. It is better to clean it out before replacing ATF, especially if overdue as it should be done every 60,000 miles.

I could be wrong (and will be corrected by the Toyota gurus here if I am!), but I don't think the AT filter is considered a routine maintenance item. When it comes to service, I try to listen to the engineers who designed the car.

I replaced the fluids and most filters last year on my '03 (@ 6800 miles), but I didn't change the transmission filter. I decided that the chances of introducing dirt or water to the transmission would be greater than the chances of getting any dirt out.

Couldn't say it any better! I agree with MasterTecInSTL. I have performed a drain and refill every 20k or once a year. I have owned my Corolla since 10k miles and have had zero issues with the transmission.

When I dropped the pan on my tranny the magnets were caked with gray clutch material. They were so heavily caked on the sides that they could not attract any more material. A drain and refill will not dislodge that stuck on material. That was around 60K miles on the odo with 2 drain and refills completed prior to pulling the pan. Screen was cleaned. I was so alarmed by the deposits I ended up adding a magnet to the inside bottom of the pan and a super strong one to the outside bottom of the pan. Of course that magnet can never be moved and located somewhere else while the pan is still attached to the tranny.
