Question Issues with Cruise control on '05 Corolla

Hello all!

I have recently(within 2 months) bought this Corolla that I LOVE, but the cruise control is quite flaky! The light will come on, but it doesn't like to set very easy.. I HAVE gotten it to work several times, but it takes a lot of tries and sometimes won't even set at all.. Its all been on the freeway(60 - 80mph), nothing special.. however, it is a Manual transmission, but i wouldn't think that would make much of a difference. let me know if i should be doing anything in particular that i'm not! thanks so much!

So you do push the stick down to engage the cruise control. Right?? Are you saying you push the stick down and it does not engage?

Indeed i do.. haha the light comes on, i tap it down, it just doesn't like to set/keep speed. It does set sometimes, just about 10% of the time.. it almost seems like chance whether or not it will hahah

Could be any number of bad switches (clutch, brake, cruise control) or a bad ECU. It would probably be best to take it to the dealer.

You're not trying to push the button and "set" the speed at the same time, are you? The button is just a switch. You can really just leave it on all the time (if the green "cruise" light wasn't so annoying, that is). I find that with mine, you have to kind of hold it down for half a second for it to register.

no, I was doing them separately.. haha I actually found on another post on here about someones manual not setting speed on cruise control if there was ANY pressure at all on clutch. Even if their foot was just resting on it. They suggested puting their foot behind the clutch and pulling back very slightly just to make sure. Even though it wasn't a solution to their problem in that post, I thought I'd try it out. I think my foot may have been resting on the clutch the other times I was attempting to engage cruise, so I think that was the culprit. when I tried it again tonight on my way home from work I pulled up from behind the clutch with my foot just a tiny bit and sure enough, the cruise control set the speed without any trouble at all! I even disengaged it and tried it again just to make sure. So thanks again everyone for your tips! and sorry I didn't look hard enough for past posts about the same problem :b thanks a ton though!

If you make it a habit of resting your foot on the clutch, start training yourself to not do that. Especially with these Corollas, it's easy to partially disengage the clutch without noticing...you will wear out your clutch significantly faster by resting your foot on it. There is a plastic block to the left of the clutch pedal where you can rest your foot while not shifting. It is farther forward than the clutch pedal and more comfortable anyway.

On any car I have ever driven, the clutch and the gas pedal both cancel cruise control. On my drive by wire Corolla, only the clutch does. They also give you a cancel button on this car. Instead of pressing the button on the cruise control wand, you can pull the cruise control wand towards yourself to cancel the cruise.
