2008 Manual tranny RPMs in 5th?

I'm looking to get a 2008 Corolla CE with a Manual tranny. Anyone know the RPMs in 5th at speed? Also does this engine have an interference engine and does it have a timing belt or chain? Thanks
Tom

- It is not an interference engine
- It has a timing chain
- What cruising speed are you talking about in 5th gear? 70 mph, 80 mph or 85 mph? At 70 mph in 5th gear, it should be turning at 3000 rpm or so.

Thanks for the info. At any speed is fine because I think with a manual tranny it's linear. For instance if it turns 3000rpm at 70mph as you say then it works out to 23.3mph/1000rpm. So for example at 58.25mph it's turning 2500 rpm, at 80mph it's turning 3430, at 85 it's tuning 3650, etc. Does this sound about right?

The 1.8 1ZZ-FE certainly is an interference engine. Exhaust valves, and maybe also inlet valves can collide with pistons if the valvetrain stops following the crankshaft's revolutions in proper sequence if timing chain/gears/tensioner fails (unlikely), or if over-revved enough to cause valve float by accidently downshifting in a gear that is too low for the speed, as I've seen happen.

1ZZ-FE can go beyond 300K on original timing chain with good regular maintenance and oil changes... Toyota recommended oil change intervals did go down from 7500 miles to 5000 miles for 2004+ models. Oil capacity was inconscpicuously increased by 1/2 quart by raising dipstick mark by almost 1/2" on 2005+ models (TSB out only in 2008) when the pistons and rings were also revised to correct the oil burning and piston slap problem.

TSB-0134-08 July 15, 2008
DRAIN AND REFILL WITH OIL FILTER CHANGE: The capacity has increased 0.5 liters (0.5 U.S. qts., 0.4 lmp. qts.) to 4.2 liters (4.4 U.S. qts., 3.7 Imp. qts.)
The 1ZZ-FE engine oil capacity and oil level gauge assembly (dipstick) has been updated... Previous part number: 15301-22030. Current part number: 15301-22050

Sorry for going OT, but... I gotta hear the story behind this, if you don't mind.

As for the transmission, in my 2005 with the 1ZZ/C59 I find myself at almost exactly 3000 RPM at 75 mph, where I typically drive. Engine is very quiet even at 90 plus mph. This is a very quiet car on the highway (although I have heard early 9th gens had wind noise issues).

There was a case of it in the defunct 9th gen Corolla forum with good pics showing the exhaust valves' indentations on the pistons' head, from downshifting into 2nd instead of 4th at highway speeds... This is the only example I can find in this forum:

possibly fatal overrev

Hah! I cannot believe they managed to "miss" all the way into second in the first place, never mind damage the engine. Something tells me they popped the clutch...and hit way more than 7800 RPM.

Popped or not, the clutch was fully engaged in a selected (accidently or mistakingly) gear that was excessively too low for the speed travelled, thus forcing the engine to spin fast enough to cause sufficient valve float to collide with pistons.
