I'm a new Corolla owner having just gotten a 2012 SE last Friday. My last car was a 2008 Avalon. I was just reading the Owner's Manual and see where Toyota is now recommending 0W-20 oil and in the Maintenance Guide Toyota is also recommending an oil change (with normal driving) at 10,000 miles, not 5,000. Am I reading this right and is this new for Corolla?
The other thing I'm curious about is the VSC and TRAC. I believe in the past there was some controversy regarding these which is why Toyota has a button to turn them off. The Avalon I had did not have these. From what I can see the TRAC is what used to be a limited slip differential or positraction. I had this on a 1968 Ford wagon and it work very well so I assume TRAC is good. The VSC I'm not familiar with. From Toyota's description in the manual it sounds good so why is it bad enough that they let you turn it off and what does it feel like when you're driving? I see where they say if you're stuck you need to turn these off (why turn off TRAC) but what about driving? When would you need to turn these off when driving?
I hope you're enjoying your Corolla.
