Question Dome light stopped working when doors open

Hello! Last week my dome light stopped working with the doors. It functions fine when using the switch on the light itself.

I think I've eliminated the possibility of a door switch because 1) same result with all doors, and 2) the "door ajar" light on the instrument panel still lights up when a door is opened.

Also, when adjusting the dimmer switch (aka rheostat) I believe the dome light is supposed to turn on when the dimmer switch is turned to the uppermost position, even with the doors closed, no? This doesn't happen. The dome light won't turn on regardless of the dimmer switch position. Right now I'm thinking it must be the dimmer switch but thought I would see if anyone else had any ideas or experience with this.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the switch in the dome light or the dimmer rheostat switch? Thanks!!

Check and see if the dash dims with the switch. I don't know if that'll help or not diagnosing the problem.

Thanks mtran! The dash does dim with the switch. But does that necessarily eliminate the dimmer switch? Any other ideas of what it could be? Thanks!

id guess the light switch itself.

as far as i know, the dimmer switch has nothing to do with the dome light.
way back in the day they would. but, you have an actual switch for the light now, having it also on the dimmer switch would be silly.

Has anyone actually figured out what is causing this? Mine is doing the same thing. Dome light works when you hit the switch by the rearview mirror, but do not come on when you open any of the doors. The red door ajar light comes on in the dash when you manually push the switch in on the doorjamb, but no dome light. Fuses are good, bulb is good. Could it still be a bad switch in one of the door jambs?
