Mystery Mount

Forgive me if this is a really dumb question, but I couldn't figure it out.

I was under the car replacing the belt this morning and I found what looks like a rubber mount on the back side of the engine, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Can anyone tell me what this is all about? Car is a 2004 LE.

This picture is taken from the front of the car, just to the passenger side of centerline. The piece is just aft of the passenger axle and oil pan, just in front of the steering rack, and just underneath the exhaust manifold. When I put my hand on top of the rubber, there's nothing resting on it or attached to it. What am I missing?

It's all good and normal... There's a bit of surface rust on top of it because it's a rubber mounted/damped steel weight.

So what does it dampen and how does it dampen it? It looks like there's a ton of space around the top of it.

It's not supposed to touch anything on top. It's a rubber mounted steel weight that dampens front suspension crossmember vibrations (dynamic damper).
