I have a 05 corolla CE, auto with package B. It starts fine when cold. But after the car's
been warm-up, park it for about an hour, it is hard to start sometimes. I say around 3 to 5 times a week. It cranks for around 5 to 7 seconds before it will start up. Normally it will start
up in under 2 seconds.
Took it back to the dealer, checked everything out. They said that the check engine light is not on and the computer has no error codes. The mechanic who worked on my car was very young.
Looks like someone just finished highschool. I am sure he can do good tune-ups, brakes or oil chg. but maybe lack of experience when it comes to trouble shooting.
Anyone has the same starting problem with their newer corollas??? (03 to 05)
Took it to a different dealership to get a second opinion. They said if they can't find anything wrong, we are not going to find anything either, and tries to brush me off. So I told him, can you please check it out, so he said give me 2 hrs. (1 hr for it to cool down) 20 min later, my car was moved from street parking to service dept parking lot. another 15 min later, he calls me on my cell and said my car is ready for pick up. (WHAT KIND OF TOYOTA SERVICE IS THIS???? THEY DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO WORK ON MY CAR)
What condition??? It runs fine and it drives fine. Just hard to start sometimes(warm engine)
By condition I meant have you noticed anything peculiar before this, was this a sudden occurence, is there any odd feeling to the car, are any lights on at the dashboard? Those things.
Well I can't advise you further as I do not own such a car. But a search led me to the following points to check on:
Engine/battery connections
Fuel pump/fuse
Fuel pressure/regulator
Engine management system/connections/wiring
Mass air flow sensor
Exhaust system/catalytic converter
Engine speed sensor
If in case you want to try yet another dealer/shop I suggest you don't tell them that the other shop didn't find anything. That way you let them hunt down the problem. This will work to your advantage whether or not they do find something (obviously something is wrong).
All the lights are working fine. But I did notice one time when I fill up the tank, the fuel needle didn't go past the full line. It was just a litle under the FULL line and slowly went up from there. I traded my 01 corolla to a 05 corolla, the 01 starts fine everytime(cold/warm or hot engine) and the 01 fuel needle moves up slowly. The 05 fuel needle moves very fast up as soon as it is in the on position.
I didn't notice the starting problem at first because I don't go out much. Just to and from work and pick up my wife on the way home. I wait for my wife 5 to 10 min at her work that's why I didn't notice. One time she didn't come out half an hour later and that's when I noticed the starting problem. It wil do that only once in a while, not all the time. Like this week and a half, it didn't do it at all.???
Thanks for your help karugs and Happy New Year to everyone.
Hi Phil I have the same exact promblem on my 05 Corolla S. I here several people are have the same problem with there 05 Corollas. The dealer think it is my fuel pump. I am waiting for the part to come in. I dont think it is the fuel pump but they can change whatever they want. I just hope this fixes the problem but I doubt it. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks ems, Please let me know. I don't think is the fuel pump either.
Is your check engine light on?
Any error codes?
Hi Phil my check engine light is not on either. The car runs perfect once I get it started. I'm just glad the car did the problem while it was at the dealer and the mechanic agreed that this was bad. Personallly I think it has to do with the switch over that they did to electronic throtal. There really isn't much difference from the 2003 to the 2005 except for the electronic throtal and the engine immobilizer. Phil do you have the engine immoblizer? Some people have told me that I have to be very careful with my key because it has the computer chip in it and that that could be causing my problem. I have kept my key seperate from all my other keys but the problem still persists. Funny thing is that some weeks the car is totally fine but, like you said the same thing happens to you.

Yes, I have the package B with the engine immoblizer. I thought it was my key too at first.
But after trying out different keys, it was still doing it. I am going to talk to my salesman next week because he's still on holidays. I want to ask him what else I can do and if there is a recall on it.
My car started normal when they were checking it, so they think nothing is wrong.

same problem with my 01 corolla.. except it takes like 3-5 seconds to ignite.. usually less than a second..
So is it still doing it or you had it all fixed? What's the solution?
Mine usually starts under 2 seconds, but sometimes 5 to 7 seconds.
it's still there.. not really too sure if there is a fix for it or not.. maybe mine is an isolated problem.. cause there might be slight differences with our engines (we both have 1zz's) .. cept I think our ecu's are different and other minor things.. I dunno really.. if you are really too concerned about it bring it to the dealer...
Just an up date, after doing a lot of research on this starting problem.
I found from another website that upgrading to a better ground cable and
a better battery with a higher cold cranking amps(cca) will help.
I am not too sure if this may help to a new car like 05.
It happened to my 88 corolla before. The fuel filter became blocked just few weeks after the replacement. It probably caused by poor quality fuel. Did your dealer have the fuel filler checked?
