So the $64,000 poor-man's Lexus question is: Is it the 3rd party parts manufacturer or the part assembler?

In my case, I blame the part manufacturer since the drive shaft comes pre-assembled.

But agreed. NA parts manufacturers are crap and should have their bogus ISO cert's torn from them like hair removal strips - painfully.

So what did you do about it this? I had the same problem and my dealership changed my transmission. I still have the same problem after that but now I have my CAI intake on which makes me not able to take it back to them. WIll they go nuts if I have a CAI on the car? I am so pissed. It is not that big of deal the car runs fine but it bothers me just knowing it makes that sound. I Could always put the stock intake back on but I don't want to go through the trouble of it. hehe

I actually haven't dealt with it yet.... I haven't had time and also since I only have 20,000km I hope it will get a bit worse before i go in. In fact, in the last couple of weeks the noise has gotten quite a bit more pronounced especially decelerating between 2 and 3k rpm.

Same Problem

Hi,

I have same problems than you with my XRS 2005. The dealer here never finded this trouble, they told me it was normal....
I've got same problems then you, rattles and they have replaced belt tensionner 3 times and 8 times the belt itselft.

I'm looking to sell the car, too much rattles...

Do you know how much the shaft cost, I think my warranty is finish.. since I got the car in 2004

thanks

LC

I thought I'd share my symptom and solution in case anyone else comes across this problem - which is apparantly very rare (hummm...was my car built on Monday??).

It is the drive-shaft hanger bearing which will probably require replacement of the entire drive shaft.

Apparantly it's not a major issue to continue driving it - but should be replaced soon. Unfortunately Toyota Canada doesn't stock this part which will have to come from the US or the part manufacturer.

I went out with the technician and he drove it all over the place testing this and that. Things we noticed were:

Repetative scraping noise is most audible at 2700 rpm with the clutch engaged and decellerating naturally (ie: no brakes, just using engine compression). You drive it up in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear to just over 3000 rpm...then let up on the accellerator and let it coast with clutch engaged. At 2700 rpm the noise is VERY obvious and slows as the car slows. Shifting the weight of the vehicle with sharp left-to-right-to-left slaloms doesn't change the tone or frequency of the sound. Teh wheel bearing was ruled out because when you disengage the clutch, the noise disappears. If it had been a wheel bearing, the noise would be there all the time.

They had to dyno it to see where the problem was coming from.

Now I'm happy the problem is identified. But ticked off since this is the 4th defect on this car with under 18,000km. Radio, sunroof rattle, dash rattles, drive shaft. Come on Cambridge!!
