i say just buy a silvertop. i picked mine up for 700$ (engine, tranny, ecu, wiring, yadda yadda). you could buy another box, but your going to spend a couple bills to get everything youll need anyway, why not do just take a little leap. if you buy a 20V engine combo you dont even have to go head first into the swap, you could just pull the tranny, flywheel/clutch, clutch slave, off of the engine and do your tranny swap first (if there isn't a start issue).
you mean like aftermarket bumpers? ae86 bumpers wont fit, but i dont know how much modification it would to take make them fit. ae92 front bumpers are basically the same shape as ours, so any ae92 chassis front bumper will fit if your willing to make or modify some brackets for it. id imagine the rears would be the same idea.
its been going slow, im in school for 30-some hours a week, plus working on top of that, i did some work on it yesterday though. got a mount for the tranny side of a ae92 w/ 5spd, it fits but it took some modding to work. its the same bolt pattern, but i used the bracket that was ontop of the c52 on the silvertop, with the actual mount off the ae92, so the holes were about 1/2 inch off, o well nothing a air grinder and a round file didnt fix...my wiring was apparently shipped on friday, so it should be here soon. i still need the bracket that goes onto the rear engine mount, the auto 4alc one wont quote fit (it uses two bolts, the silvertop uses 3, plus the c52 has a ridge that comes out that barely interferes with the bracket, just enough so it doesnt fit all the way on). the wreckers wont take it off, so im kind of stuck for ideas, might just modify the one i have to work?
ran into fuel system issues. i had a ae92 gt-s tank that i was going to put on, but its a fit bit bigger then the ae82 one (a couple inches wider, and about 2-3 inches taller in some spots). so i took the pump out and tried to mount it into the ae82 carbie tank as a temp job, but the pump is about an inch to tall to fit it. i don't want to source a fx-16 tank and pump, as itll be expensive. so my solution is to go with a fuel cell in the trunk, with an inline pump (probably walbro). talked to the hotrod/drag shop on friday after school about it, itll be about 200-250$ for a decent sized plastic one, with foam, and fittings and sump. my neighbour said he might be able to hook me up with a used one though for cheaper though.
other then that, might be fitting the engine next weekend? *crosses fingers*
probably easier to get a front clip, then you get brakes and all those goodies, along with the fact that youll know the engine condition and km, and that you have everything. if you learn how to do the work yourself youll save alot of money. my swaps almost over and its costed me like 1500$ tops, including having someone rewire the harness (only thing i didn't do)
im puttin in the 20V tonight. havent fixed the speedo issue, ill get to it later. itll obviously be much quicker, its atleast 2x the hp (even more compared to a tired 4ac, with a auto)
hey guys, just an update, my s/t is in the bay, not completely mounted yet, but pretty much. still need axles. just need to do some interior wiring, and need to sort out my fuel system. but ill prolly hook up a spare tank to it just to see if itll run.
20V is in. i had to chop the ae92 driver side mount a bit to fit, the rear mount i just spaced ot with washer on the tranny bracket side and it worked great. ill finish it on the weekend.
problems ive run into:
-axles, the 20V uses equal length axles, as opposed to the normal A series axles. so i looked at the tranny setup, and the drivers side looked the same distance to the spindle as it did with the auto tranny. so i figured if there equal length, i could just use a drivers side axle on each side. so i went to the wreckers, got a ae92 gt-s halfshaft and threw it on the passenger side, worked like a charm. tonight i went to install the my drivers sdie (using the old 4ac axle) and it turns out it was like 1-2inches to short. so ill be takign another trip to the wreckers i guess.
got the rad in and hooked up, using a 2core ae92 gt-s rad, that had the right positioned inlets and outlets (they wont all work).
fuel system, i decided not to screw around with tryign to find a new tank, and pump, so i picked up a pro-street 16 gal. fuel cell (plastic, sending unit, foam, yadda yadda). running with a walbro 255 in-line. for the sending unit im running a GM unit. the GM unit reads something like 72 ohms at full, and 0 at empty. the corollas guage goes 115 ohms at full, to 1-5 ohms at empty (iirc). so basically, when the tanks empty itll show empty, and when its full, itll show 3/4ish. ill eventually get a aftermarket level gauge, but this will do for now. im hooking all my lines up tomo, so itll probably fir up sometime between then and the end of the week.
if you do a weber and a cam from paradise racing, they garauntee 40 hp+ over stock. considering its a cali emissions engine, adding a freer breathing carb with a aggressive cam, its not really farfetched. maybe do a cheap exhaust to?
swap hasnt moved much further ahead. im doing 35 hours a week at school for an auto apprenticeship, and work about 20 hours a week so its hard to find time. ive been trying to gather suspension and brake parts as well, so its not just an engine swap. waiting on a check, so i can buy my fuel lines.
i just bought intrax lowering springs for mine. i was going to use a whiteline package, but ive reached a point where i dont want to spend a shitload more of money to build this car ( i mean if its going to serve any sort of track duty, it doesnt even have swaybars...). im looking to go turbo after this build up a lil run what ya brung drag car, and when i reach a point where im sick of this chassis ill move on to a later model and swap my engine build into that. from what ive read you can use fx16 struts on ours. should be able to use ae92 struts and springs as well.
fx16 should be a direct fit, just use your stock mount at the top (98% sure it will fit), or find a 4 bolt one from an fx16 since we already have a mounting hole for the 4 bolt (like a cusco adjustable one ). if the fx16 springs dont fit on my stock ones for now, ill just grab new struts (since i have to already) and work it out.
i wouldnt bother gettign struts from the wreckers, there probably toast. fx16 should fit, i wont be being mine till after xmas so im not positive. the fx16 definately uses the 4 bolt upper, but we have an extra spot for the 4th bolt on ours. probably will be difficult to find coilovers for a fx16, most likely theyd be custom. you could do springs and struts with an adjustable upper though?
