Cooling system issue

Wondering if this problem is something other then my headgasket or rad. The rad isn't leaking currently. I've been having an issue where the rad is emptying itself into the overflow container and not drinking it back up. I tried replacing the rad cap, changing the thermostat and coolant, thats when the problem arrose.. with the themostat change...

Would an air pocket in the cooling system cause this, tomorrow I am going to try to run it on idle with the cap off with the heat blasting to try to see if it sucks more up, if so then I guess that was the problem.

Just thought I would ask on here hoping someone might know...

t stat backwards?? and burp the air out of the coolant system..

run car with cap off. till the fans come on.. make sure the overflow container is filled up.. a little more than the full mark

once the car warms up and the fans come on.. put cap on and turn car off.. wait like 10-20 mins and watch it suck in the overflow fluids.. once thats done the air should be all out of the system..

also check to make sure the t stat is install the right way

yeah the t stat is in right... Spring on the inside

whats wierd is when it overheats it seems to cool down really fast by lowering the rpm. I haven't had a car cool down that fast when overheating so I was also thinking maybe the sensor is finished. I was also thinking the water pump as a possible, but I wasn't totally sure, I was also thinking the head gasket could be doing it.

How much do water pumps for these cars usually go for?

ok so I'm thinking the water pump might be gone, not sure. But I was thinking. With the rad in it's poor shape could the fact I don't have the heat shield on the exhaust manifold be causing to much heat at high rpm and causing the rad to boil over? that or my motor is drinking the water from the flush I am doing, since I can only run water while I do it with the soap. The over flow doesn't seem to spray everywhere as much but the rad empties FAST now.

Like I said in my other post maybe replacing the headgasket will reveal that it was the problem, because like I said before how could I make it 250 km plus without pulling over but never actually fully overheating espicially since the cooling system really low like that if the water pump was finished?

To get any air out try running it with heater set on max with cap off with car on an incline. Top off when warm and air is purged. Does the cap on the overflow container fit tight? Is the hose in good shape?

actually I was going to replace the overflow cap and hose, because I noticed the soap was causing it to foam, as if the hose has a leak near the cap or the cap itself is cracked and leaking, I thought maybe that was letting all the air into the system.

I tried the air thing, but the problem is it doesn't suck the overflow back in when it gets low and on top of that even if it did there wouldn't be enough int he overflow since it starts to drain out, I was thinking of wrapping the manifold with some heat wrap stuff since like I said I know the rad is just about done but with all the other repairs I can't afford it currently

bro i have my own issues currently... but thats not one of them. my thermstat was bad so i replaced with low temp i think a 160 or 170f.. like 2 days ago along with removing the ac compressor and condensor, that will help rad a lot but your stock header is not going to boil the rad the shield doesn't make that much of a difference (not using mine either) and the rad is designed for this situation...

i would say that your rad does have a problem the lower reservoir problably is clogged so the overflow witch is just a hole below the cap works fine but the rad isn't making vacum with motor.
check your water pump either that or rad and hoses. but my money is water pump if you overheat above like 20mph

my fan is wired to a switch in my dash and i can run my car with the fan on all day in the sun and it doesn't come close to overheating... now if i could just get the damn thing to start!!!

thats the thing I only overheat when I hit around 120 km/h + and only when I do it for awhile.

The rad might be designed for it but I need a rad as I said above. So I was thinking maybe the heat is bothering it because when I hit heavy rain it stops overheating.

Ok so when I replace it my problems might go away I am sooo hopeful! But like I said about the water pump. How could I drive 2 and a half hours to my girlfriends house holding around 4000 rpm and it takes me an hour to start having heat issues, or when I hit the 3 or 4 huge hills on the way to Toronto on the 400
