Headgasket stuff, and cleaning question

so I popped the head off tonight, would have finished but the guy at Toyota never ordered the part after I went there on Friday.... One of the guys that knows me fixed it and it will be in this morning.

My problem is that the headgasket looks decent, Almost new.... I know why I lost cylinder 4, because the stuff that seals it at the bottom was gone, so I am thinking that the bolts didn't seal it right.

Now flashmn you said the bolts didn't need to be replaced, but I also don't remember putting oil on the threads as you suggested a couple weeks ago for torquing them. I'm going to price them tomorrow at toyota, but sadly I don't have alot of cash to blow on them so I will be S.O.L. if they are to much money.

Other things I saw was that I think #3 and #4 were drinking the water from the flush :|. And #1 is black as hell which is understandable since thats where the oil was leaking from around the block so it's safe to assume that oil was going into that cylinder, so maybe I also won't need to do the valve seals as badly as I thought.

Also going to check the head to see if it's lvl, if not... Again screwed for now . But as some of you know I am looking for a new motor anyways so yeah.

Lastly, Anyone know of good products to clean the oil off the block.. From when I drove without my oil cap and from the h/g leak. Also a product to clean the surface for the H/G on the head and block, maybe the pistons too?

I'm curious about the problem with #4. What did you mean by the stuff that seals it at the bottom? Were you talking about the bottom of the head gasket?

Another question, should I use a sealant between the headgasket and the block/head

Correct. I've used mine for like 3 times now

No sealant, leave that out...
Have the head surfaced anyways, otherwise you're just asking for problems.

I used a scraper that painters use to scrape off the old gasket and used some acetone to clean off the rest. Get some good engine cleaner to clean the oil on the exterior of the block. Good luck with your repair!
