are weber carb kits smog legal in california? we have some strict emissions laws in california and a performance shop i go to a lot says that weber kits are not CARB legal cause they disconnect the vacuum lines and hoses. i searched for some reviews and a person who had it installed it on his truck said that performance gain was minimal (they advertise an 15-20% power gain) and it made his truck thirsty cause it was running too rich (even when they were changing the settings on the carb).

i drive an 1987 corolla sedan (AE82) with the 4ac engine with carb, so i was looking for some much needed additional power. i was contemplating the 4age 20v swap, but its kinda expensive for an old car with no available aftermarket suspension parts. anyone know good or bad things about weber carbs?

Depends on what weber, weber is a maker of carbs, not a specific carb.
DCOE's can be thirsty, but they do give good throttle response.
DGV can be close to stock, if not better.

i've doing more research and the only thing that concerns me is whether the carbs will actually perform as advertised. the last thing i want to do is shell out $200-$300 for a carb that drinks fuel like soda, while most likely not be smog legal. the Weber 32/36 Carb is recommended if drivability and fuel economy is more important, while the 38mm DGAS carb is more performance oriented.

strangely enough, for some reason, paradise racing sells an aggressive carb, cams, valve springs package that will guarantee 40hp and power band up to 8,000 rpm. if the 38mm is best suited for performance, why do they use the 32/36 as the main carb piece?

Even the 32/36 will flow alot, the dual throat system will make it nicer to drive around town than a single bore/dual bore of the same size.
Never fiddled around with a 38DGAS.
