Interior Dash Crack Repair...

Who's done it before? Today I pulled a AE92 dash that was cracked up from the junk yard to see if I can restore it and then replace the on in my car with that retarded crack that materialized a few years back.

I was thinking of bondoing the cracks, sand it down, and then vinyl paint it. Maybe there's something better to use than bondo. silicone? I've seen this done before but I'm concerned because under the vinyl is spongy material. Does that prevent the bondo from sticking on? Also this dash i pulled is pretty baked... if I hit it real hard it cracks, and sometimes chips fall off does vinyl paint keep it together? I hit it alot today though so I think it's done cracking... I've never messed with this kind of stuff before it feels like I'm about to do sculpting...

I've seen attempts to fill the cracks and the old stuff just shrinks more leaving the fill with gaps around it. (Not saying something won't work.) They do make a plastic cover for some makes which fits quite well over the broken dash but tends to appear a bit too shiny to me. Then there's the formed carpet-type covers too.
