'92 revs, not moving

I have a 92 prizm with a 3 speed auto. The problem started with a loud pop, but the car drove fine for about 10 miles. The next time it was started it wouldn't move, it just revved. Later I tried driving the car to my house and made about six miles before it revved with no movement. You could hear a whine that went up with revs while it was moving. I shut it down, let it sit for about 15 minutes and tried again. It drove for about a quarter mile before it wouldn't move again. It's been sitting for a few months and now has a whine that seems to rise with rpm's, but will drive fine for a short distance. Then the engine revs, but the car won't move. It acts like it's in neutral. Someone said it was the differential, but I'm looking for other opinions. Thanks

I forgot to mention after a couple months of sitting it started leaking some fluid. I didn't realize it until it had already soaked into the concrete, so I couldn't tell for sure what it was. I checked the oil, brake fluid and ps fluid and they were full. I checked the trans. fluid with the engine off, and there was enough to be on the stick. I know you're supposed to check it running but I didn't want to damage anything if the fluid was low.

Check your transmission fluid level.

Put the front end up on jackstands so the front wheels are off the ground. Put it in gear and see if the half-axles turn. If they turn at the differential-end and not at the wheel-end then you broke a CV joint.

With the car back down on the ground, check the fluid level in your differential.

You didn't want to check it while running.. but you still drove it? that makes no sense.

I wasn't the one driving recently. I injured my back so I can't do much of anything. I checked the fluid level a few days before the last time it was driven. I will have somebody check out the suggestions above. I have to rely on somebody else to do it right now, so it will probably be a few days before I find out anything. It gets very frustrating not being able to do simple things that should be so easy.
