My 1991 Corolla need a "differential"

Hey guys - the "differential" in my Corolla is dead and needs a new one - so says my shade tree mechanic.

I've spun enough wrenches to know that my Corolla is a front wheel drive car (duh) and that the car's "third member" is actually part of the transmission (three speed automatic in this case).

Where can I get the "guts" I need to rebuild this "differential"? Anyone got a schematic?

My mechanic is actually pretty sharp but ain't well-versed in Tie-Yoda .

Might look into buying a used trans. The issue with the diff is finding the gears and installing them with the correct shimming (plus cost or parts). This is required because of the tolerances in the case, gears and bearings. Make sure you have someone who knows what they are doing or any new gears may start whining in a few thousand miles.

the pinion is cast into the intermediate shaft so your into the trans end to fix that and the ring gear is fairly accesible after separating the case.

no, the 91 is a A-131L (at least for the 3 speed)

you will need something to activate the overdrive if you take the A240L (and im not sure that it will fit on the 4A-FE, since the version you talk about was made for a 4A-C)
