Can you share a little more information...like the year/model of your car and the modifications to the rear deck you are curious about?
woops, should have included
1989 4af 4 door
well its ideally to get more ventilation from the trunk, as I'm an audio guy, and even though in the future I will be reconing my 12"s to 15"s and since I'm not too interesting in making it a full wall behind the B pillars; using the whole trunk is my best bet.
Basically as it stands with the way the trunk is, where its 34/36" inches (cant remember which) on the inside entrance into the trunk, as opposed to the top @ just shy of 30" it makes it rather hard to squeeze into the space.
I'm simply looking for ideas regarding structure of the car, and what this would effect.
[rant]heres the thing, I'm not too concerned about you opinion of audio and how absurd you may find it to be. I'm sure I'll get comments about why would I ever do this simply for audio, as I'm 100% I'd say the same about alot of the work you guys do to your cars as well. However, if i knew how to do something, I'd be more than willing to give you all the suggestions i could, no matter how wrong it's application may be. [/rant]
The previous owner of my GTS cut a hole in the middle of the rear deck to put in some speaker that was eventually removed before I bought it. I have now repaired the cutout in the cardboard/felt cover back to stock and all looks fine on the outside, but the metal still has a big gaping hole in it. =\ Oh well.

Well the general idea, albeit serving the same general purpose, will not have a speaker in the metal. This is just to add a few inches of width and height in order to allow for about 2-3 cubic feet of airspace to be added.

I'm aware, I've seen more than my share of crashes growing up with family being in emergency services.

Most automotive tolerances are 3mm-1cm.. so 1 cm wouldnt actually mean that much and with majority of AE92's already infested with rust, that 1cm doesnt really seem that bad after all.
yeah shit the hole in my trunk I fiberglassed up for the winter was HUGE! right on the rear driver side suspension tower and my car hasn't killed me yet and I actually push it.
Now I want to make sure I have this straight. Your telling them not to cut holes in the metal under the rear deck?

Wait a minute there, you FIBERGLASSED a rust hole?!
ahahaha yeah for now... what could I do. I don't have a welder nor the money to get one atm. I want to get one this summer and go on a frenzy of repairing the holes. There's only a couple bad ones. The rest of the car is still fine. Could have been worse... I could have used BONDO!!! ROFL
The game plan is to get a welder and a battery powered cutter and go to the wreckers and cut a couple of pieces I need out of a car that those sections are good. From there I would like to buy new rocker pannel covers. The frame under them... at least used to be good haven't seen it in awhile. Last time I looked under the side skirts the thin metal that is on the outside was in bad shape.. Then coat alot of it with POR15
now the question is, take one of the ae92 hatches, which effectively has the same body, except where it enters the trunk, in which case there is not rear deck. Since this doesnt seem to have any ill effect, why would removing the rear deck just not make it have the same issues as the hatch?
